Because we have had so many similar queries and because so many people have seemed fearful of this, I just tried this on my son's Vista Home Premium, SP1 machine.
1. I ran the NIS2009 installation without uninstalling the NIS2008.
2. The installer found and uninstalled NIS2008 without problems.
3. After a required reboot, it continued the installation without being relaunched.
4. The installation went without incident. It picked up the NIS2009 without prompting and self-registered. It was ready to go.
5. I opened NIS2009 and launched Live Update to get the most recent processing updates, which were downloaded and installed without problem. I re-ran Live Update in case there were some linearly-dependent processes waiting in queue. There were none.
6. I opened IE7 and waited about 15 seconds. The Identity Safe Toolbar was in place. The only aberration was the one that seems to occur all the time: The links toolbar had been closed. I reopened it and that was fine.
7. I opened Firefox 3 and waited about 15 seconds. The add-on info screen popped open and showed me the two new Norton add-ons. I closed the screen; and there was the Identity Safe Toolbar as expected.
8. I am now running a full system scan on the machine; and it is proceeding without incident.
I am quite happy (so far)!
Hope this information is useful to everyone.
Hi mijcar
On My Vista Desktop Computer...
I did the same thing with - N360 ... To ... N360 v2
The upgrade installation seemed fine at first
I just found it odd that N360 v2 was constantly wanting to scan.
Then a week later...
I just happened to notice in Vista's - Problem Reports and Solution
A big long list of... Symantec Service Framework - Stopped Working
Basically...
This was happening every time I Shutdown or Restarted my computer.
I Uninstalled - N360 v2
Went and bought the N360 v2 Disk
Re-Installed!
The Same Thing!
Only now I noticed other things as well
Unexpected Scans ... Even while I was using N360 v2
And... Strange Scan Results.
I Tried... Uninstalling & Reinstalling - N360 v2 ... Approx 5 times.
But... Still The Same!
Thanks!
Hi mijcar,
Thanks for taking the time to post your detailed experience with the "over-install" method. It was very informative!
I generally prefer the clean install approach, but it's good to hear you had success with this method. I am sure many will benefit from your input.
However, since Zana is experiencing some issues, I believe an uninstall of the previous Norton Product would be beneficial.
But Zana, you are working with a 60 day Trial OEM version of NIS 2008, and I do not know if that activation will apply to the 2009 product. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will jump in regarding the Trial activation.
Phil, that's a good point. But it might be mitigated by the following:
NIS 2009 comes with its own 15 day trial period, which should be more than enough time to decide if she wants to stick with NIS or not. Plus, on most machines, the 60 day OEM trial can be restored from onboard. That's something for Zana to determine. And, who knows, maybe putting on NIS 2009, then removing it, then restoring NIS 2008 from the "original program files" would fix the problems she's been having.

Correct.
And normally a OEM license will only work with the products it is allianced to
To keep you log-ins for you Identity Safe, I would un-install via Add/Remove and then, to make sure all of the comonents are gone from N.I.S. 2008, Run the Norton Removal Tool.
However, I would hold-off for a few weeks Buying/Installing N.I.S. 2009 if you can as some users - not all - are having problems.

I wouldn't recommend "holding off" on getting the latest Norton Internet Security 2009 product. Nobody posts to forums to say "The product installed great!" They typically come looking to resolve a problem, so we tend to only see issues on here and lose sight that NIS 2009 works very well for many many customers. In fact, many of the issues we see lately on the forums are a result of renmant beta code on the system (which is why we recommend backing up your system before testing, to eliminate this problem). If you are interested in the latest and greatest in system security, I would highly recommend getting Norton Internet Security 2009. Thanks!

Point taken.
Never said it wasn't a good Product; I think it is a great product!

Mine did! I had absolutely no problems, and that's unusual because I always have in the past! I didn't even uninstall the old version. NIS 09 saved all my log-ins, uninstalled NIS 08, restarted and installed NIS 09 without any hicups at all. So I would recommend trying this method first before uninstalling manually as you could risk losing your log-ins.
I'll join with McStick and report no problems.
I did it differently by uninstalling NIS 2008, but it appears folks are having success with both methods.
Hi Everyone
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back
Re : Uninstalling NIS 08
I've noticed with a lot of other security software...
Before Uninstalling ...
You're supposed to Right-Click the Taskbar Icon ... And Click - Exit
This completely shuts the software down ... So that it can safely be uninstalled
Stops It Putting Up A Fight!
However...
I have never heard anyone say this about - Norton
Is it possible to do this with - NIS 08 ?
Also...
What about - NIS 08 .. Product Protection
Would NIS 08 be more likely to uninstall successful ... If I was to turn Product Protection - OFF
Just Ideas!
I really want to make sure this laptop doesn't end up the 3rd computer I've had ...
That wont go beyond the year of the preinstalled trial
Thanks!
Zana,
None of this should make a difference. NIS uninstall has the processes build in. It will shut itself down, et cetera. Anyway, you can't actually complete shutdown NIS or AV. You can shutdown various processes; but in order for NIS to work correctly, it would have to know when and how to turn itself backon, so there are always processes running in the background.
So far, I have had no uninstall issues with NIS 2008 or NIS 2009 (except for when testing in beta). I have done so now over two dozen times. However, you should be prepared to kick back and wait while some of the uninstalling/installing is going on. On one computer (with low RAM, but I don't know if that is the reason or not) there was no motion on the progress bar, nothing evident on the screen, and I kept thinking "just close the **bleep** thing!" But I walked away, made a great omelet with sauted red bell pepper and onions, a spinach and artichoke dip; topped with finely chopped tomatoes; ate it with some delicious toasted fresh sourdough; and came back to a perfect uninstall waiting for permission to reboot.
Timing, food, and patience are everything.
Hi mijcar
Thanks!
I just wanted to be sure
Hi
Some uninstall advice needed please
At the moment I'm using a... 60 Day Trial - NIS 08
That came preinstalled on my new laptop.
Now even though I've had Norton software in the past.
Uninstalling has always been something that gets me stressed
e.g... Do I just uninstall the normal way ... Use the - Norton Removal Tool ... One then the other ... Or What?
Normal Way = Add and Remove - XP ... Programs and Features - Vista
In the past - I've tried...
1/ The Normal Way
2/ The Normal Way ... Then The - Norton Removal Tool
3/ The Norton Removal Tool
4/ Either No - 1, 2 or 3 ... And Then - Delete Left Over Folders
5/ Either No - 1, 2 or 3 & 4 ... Then - CCleaner
However!
No Matter how I've tried uninstalling NIS or N360 in the past...
Unless I've then installed another Norton from the same year.
e.g. - Uninstall NIS 07 ... Install N360 v1 ... No Problem!
But If the computer has for instance...
Came preinstalled with NIS 07 ... And I've then tried to install N360 v2 ... Big Problems!
On 2 Desktop Computers...
I have never been able to move on from one year of Norton software ... To the Next
My Old XP...
NIS 06 - TO - N360 .... Disaster!
My Vista Desktop...
NIS 07 - TO - N360 .... No Problem!
N360 - TO - N360 v2 ... Disaster!
So knowing I want to install NIS 09 on my new laptop
I really need to make sure that I successfully uninstall the trial of NIS 08 first.
Does anyone know the very best way... To Uninstall - NORTON ?
Thanks!
Simple way of installing NIS 09 - Download, and install! Then re-start when required. It worked for me, no problems (There have been in the past ie NIS 07 to 08) Hope this helps.
