Uninstalling Norton Toolbar and Norton Vulnerability Protection

Hi

 

I would like to know how to fully remove Norton Toolbar and Norton Vulnerability Protection from Firefox and Internet Explorer. I already know that they can be disabled and that they can be hidden from the toolbars but that is not enough. I've already searched the forums and online and there's legitamate answers. I do not like programs embedding themselves into my browsers and I especially do not like programs that cannot be easily removed. That to me is malware itself. I do not care for the "extra protection" that I gain from the extensions. I am a vigilant user and an AV program should simply be a backup.

You cannot uninstall the individual components, but you can disable them.  I'm not certain why that would not be sufficient, or why you object to the protection - most malware enters via the browser.  Unless you are completely disabling scripting in the browser (in which case you could not post to this forum) you should retain the IPS presence in the browser to prevent driveby attacks.

True that I can disable it and move on, but it doesn't change the fact that I should have the ability to uninstall an extension from my browser if I choose to. Every extension I've come across, including antivirus program extensions, allow for removal with (either through Firefox or the program itself). If this is just how Norton is, I will probably just move on.

 

Oh and I use the lovely NoScript extension.

RE: removing NTB - not just disabling it.

 

From some old notes I found regarding Norton Secutiy Suite (N360) on XP:  You will have to change the path to Norton Internet Security and the current Engine number you have installed.  It will also be under Programs (X86) in windows 7.

 

 


Reboot in SAFE mode (hold down F8 before the Windows splash screen)


Go to C:\Program Files\Norton Security Suite\Engine\X.X.X.X (the X's reflect your Norton Version #)


For Firefox, rename the file coFFPlgn.dll to coFFPlgn_orig.dll


For Firefox, create a new text file, rename it top coFFPlgn.dll and set it to "read only"


For IE, rename the file CoIEPlg.dll to CoIEPlg_orig.dll


For IE, create a new text file, rename it top CoIEPlg.dll and set it to "read only"


Restart your computer

  

You should now find that neither Firefox nor IE will have the toolbars.
