Er..Hi..
What risk do i have if i connect to a wireless network which is unsecured..
Can people get my password if i type it in..
what if it has mac filtering ( < --- i think thats what its called.. allow only certain ip adress to use the internet..while others connect...they get something called...limited or no connectivity )
this question has been bugging me ...
will norton internet security up my security ?
if people can see what i am doing....so i use the On-screen keyboard...
is it safer ?
this question has been bugging me for months and years..
please answer asap..
thanks in advance
cheers
Hi tanmx,
If you connect to a wireless network that is unsecured, you are exposing your information to anyone within radio range of your network. Encrypting your network prevents unauthorized users from accessing your network and also encrypts your network traffic to give you the best protection from "eavesdroppers".
Norton does not "up" your security, but rather monitors your wireless network to be sure it is secured by encryption or other methods.
Go to the NIS 2009 Description Page and click on "IMPROVED: Secure Network Connections". There is a short tutorial video which explains how Norton monitors your network and what adjustments you can make to secure it.
Additionally, this page gives you written information about how to secure your wireless network.
Hope that helps.
thanks for the answer…but my bro dont encrpt it…he says its useless…i asked him to do it lots of time he said its pointless…he dint listen to me…he only put the mac filtering for only allow permitted IP adress to use the internet…other who use get a popup like…
Limited or no connectivity.
So people can see my information ? what i typed and stuff ?..omg…will norton prevent this ?
1 more thing…what are Ports ? my bro opened some ports to play games…
will opening port make my internet vulnerable ?
will norton help ?
anyway…Phil_D … kudo S !
Hi tanmax
I can't help with the ports other than certain ports are for certain traffic ie for playing games, email etc( feel free to correct me Guys).
Does your brother need to use your PC??Doesn't sound like he cares much for your "safety".I don't know but can you set him up with his own account so he only has certain privileges?
Hi tanmx,
Encryption is not useless. It is the best defense that is currently available.
I should point out that if someone with the proper knowledge and equipment is determined to get your information, they can. However the idea is to make it as difficult as possible and that's where encryption comes in.
Perhaps you could explain to your brother that although mac filtering will prevent others from accessing your network, it does not protect your network traffic (the information you send back and forth via wireless). Norton cannot protect against this.
This is a basic definition of ports: "Ports are names or "handles" given to various network connections your computer uses to communicate with other computers". Here are two links to some more info on ports: Link1, Link 2
Manually opening ports is questionable except in the hands of someone who is experienced or has been given explicit instructions. If ports are incorrectly configured, they can open a door to wide range of exploits.

Hi mo,
Good explanation up there and good commentary down here:

The only correction I would make is that a limited account would not reduce exposure in this instance.
Encryption is a great option. But for me not really necassary.
I for one use unsecure wlan connections very often for my work. As long as you use a good firewall and IDS you will always be safe. People need some sort of approval to connect to my laptop. If I don't give it to them I'm safe
ok thanks guys for answering me…i will ask my dad to get me a cheap desktop desktop so there will be no wireless on it and so my bro has to give me the wire and he use his wireless =D
as for the ports part …Phil D said

so…if ports are incorrectly configured, they can open a door to wide range of exploits…Do you mean threats ? do norton protect me from these ?
love you guys…
Cheers
Hi tanmx,
Those are good questions.
Yes, exploits means threats.
You know, I failed to ask an important question. What version of NIS are you using? 2009, 2008?
Norton may protect you from threats that come in from improperly configured ports, but the best idea is to stop the threats at the "door". That is what makes NIS so effective. The Norton Smart Firewall will automatically close unused ports and then configure the other ports to work with the programs you use. By letting Norton configure your ports, you have less chance of making a mistake by opening them manually.
So, if you get a new desktop, let Norton take over the port configuration, and if by rare chance a program has a problem accessing the internet, there is a very simply and safe method within Norton to adjust for that.
But again, please let us know what version of Norton you are using - it would be a big help to us.
Thanks.
Edit: for grammar (guess I need more coffee!)
Hi phil D...my bro put configure the ports manually cause he play games....if there are internet threats through ports......so do norton..and yea...mines 2009 nis...TRIAL btw...does it protects me ?
The Trial vesion is the same full product as the licensed version except that it has a time limit on how long it can be used. How much more time do you have on the trial?
"Does it protect me?" - That depends upon the type of threat and how it enters. Some threats are very subtle when entering and if you have allowed entry though an incorrectly configured port, it may not be picked up until it is already on your system. Sometimes by that point it is too late.
Just to repeat, the best way to prevent threats is to deny them access in the first place.
oh ok Phil_D...thanks so much....but cant do anything about securing the network..bro dont believe me..he says lots of stupid things...says..why should i trust forum ? i could post anything on the forum...will ppl trust me ? ....GRR....i hate him saying that..he control the internet and stuff..grr !!
Don't worry about it. It can be challenging sometimes to share a computer.
As far as the Norton Community Forums, it has been my observation the everyone here seems to strive for accuracy in the suggestions they present; even when the opinions may differ a bit.
If you get a computer of your own, stop back here for any questions you may have. We'd love to hear from you!
Best Wishes.
My wireless network is secure (using WEP encryption, MAC authentication, and broadcast off), but NIS 2009 scan history on my laptop (which I connect to my network wirelessly) tells me that it is not secure. I have the trust level set to “Trusted”, as I cannot use my printer (which is connceted to my desktop, not my router) if the settings are any higher security level. What is going on?
