Updated NIS Software, Now Windows Desktop Will Not Load

I just updated my NIS to the latest version. My computer needed to reboot and when it did, the Windows (Home Premium, 64 bit) will no longer load up. The circle (which replaced the hourglass) just sits and spins when you put the mouse down on the taskbar. No icons appear on my desktop, I cannot ctrl+alt+del, nothing works. I came into Windows Safe Mode to try and do a System Restore, but it tells me I have no restore points even though I have manually set some in the past.

What should I do now??

Thanks for the input Kelly.

Where is the Repair option in Safe Mode? Isn't that an option you choose when you reboot your computer and hit F8?

Yes, it's the monochrome menu that comes up after you press F8 repeatedly.  Repair Computer should be at the top of the list (above the listings for Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking).  This assumes your computer came with a recovery partition - newer ones come with a recovery partition rather than recovery disks.  If there's no recovery partition (and hence no repair computer option), did you by chance make a Windows Repair Disk when you got your computer?  Or do you have the original Windows install disk that might have come with the computer?

Well.
That was interesting.

While in Safe Mode (which was how I accessed this site), I had gone to a command prompt and did a "sfc /scannow". It found no  problem and then I scheduled a disk scan on reboot.

When I rebooted, it said that it could not access the volume because a recently installed software update (NIS) screwed up my files. I can't remember the exact wording because the message disappeared right after I read it (hate that, don't even have time to write it down).

Anyway, my computer is now working fine.  ??

BUT, Norton widget that I kept on my desktop is no longer there that shows me everything is 'green'.  Anyone know where it went or how to get it back up there?

Thank you.

Ah, okay. I remembered correctly then. I thought you meant there was an option in Safe Mode to start a repair.

I've done repairs on XP before, but have never had to do a repair on my Win 7 machine before. It's always run very smoothly with practically no problems.

Yes, I do have a recovery partition, but didn't receive a disc with my computer (laptop).

Happily, I don't have to repair anyway. Not sure what fixed the problem, but something did. Odd.

Thanks for your help anyway.  It's nice to know there's someone out there willing to help those of us in distress.  =)

Utalice,

Whatever happened, glad you're back up and running.

Norton did away with its desktop gadget with the newest version of Norton due to a security issue.  So I was told.  I liked the gadget and I miss it, but if it was a security hazard then probably best not to have it.

You might want to run Windows Update, make sure your computer downloads and installs them all to bring you up to date, then test your updated NIS and make sure everything is functional.

Kelly

I just tried Windows Update and it stated there were no important updates for my system. My last update was Nov. 29th. Maybe they don't apply to the 64 bit version of Windows 7?

Okay, this is odd. My pc just lagged for a minute and now NIS is gone from my hidden icons area.

Cripes. Something has gone buggy.
I just checked for Windows Updates again and now I see some. Downloading now.

Utalice,

Today Microsoft released 12 important updates (about 95MB worth) and a couple optional ones for Windows 7 x64 today (that includes a few for MS Office, if you have it, so maybe a little less if you don't).  In any case, there's a big batch of them.

Windows Update may not be functioning properly.  Suggest trying the Microsoft Fixit at this link, which most often identifies and repairs issues that prevent Windows Update from functioning properly.

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

THEN, if it identifies and repairs issues, type Windows Update in the Start Menu search box, and select Check For Updates.  Let it download and install at least the critical/important ones.  You'll need to do a restart after Windows completes the updates.

Then see if NIS loads up as normal during startup.  This should do the trick, if not let us know.

Kelly

I guess our posts crossed in cyberspace.  If Windows Update is working fine, then you won't need the fixit utility (bookmark it in case you need it later on though :-)  ).

You'll have to do a restart after Windows finishes the updates, so let us know if NIS loads up and functions OK after startup.

Kelley,

Thanks for helping to resolve this.

Just for the record:

<< Norton did away with its desktop gadget with the newest version of Norton due to a security issue.  So I was told.  I liked the gadget and I miss it, but if it was a security hazard then probably best not to have it. >>

Although you are right that Norton dropped its own gadget they did this because Microsoft decided gadgets were security risks and dropped them altogether in Windows 8 so Norton dropped theirs with the 2013 / V20 version.

Thanks, Hugh

I know it dropped off my desktop when I updated to 2013/v20, and knew it had something to with gadgets being risky (and hence dropped), I just didn't put it all together.

Ok...

Thanks for the link to the tool, although I was getting the updates, the first time I would search for updates, it wouldn't show me that I needed them. I did run the tool and it fixed a problem. =)

I also had Norton errors (8504, 104). After I rebooted from updates, I ran Norton Live Update until I could no longer get any updates and it seems fine now. Windows update also seems to be working correctly now.

I'm glad to get it sorted out. I hate it when I upgrade something and my system goes all buggers on me.  Bleh!

Thanks for your assistance.

Utalice,

Glad it's resolved.  Hope your new version of NIS keeps humming without troubles, but you know where to find us if you need us.

Could you do us a favor and mark whichever post best describes the solution to the problem you experienced, even if it's your own.  That way others who may have the same issue can go quickly to a workable solution amongst the gazillion other posts in the forum.

Many thanks and all the best,

Kelly
