Huwyngr, I know it's listed.  Sorry, I misspoke myself.  But watch what happens when you go to the product update center and see if there is an update for NSW 2008 Basic Edition.  You get a big "sorry, Bud!"

Hello Mijcar,

If you need to redownload NSW 2008 Basic Edition, as of right now, you can still download it from this page.

Sorry, Tim, you had it backwards.  I wanted to get the NSW 2009 Basic Edition.  And finally managed to, although it isn't yet available as a trial download or a replacement download.   And that should answer Huwyngr's question, too.  :smileywink:

Hello mijcar,

NSW 2009 Basic Edition doesn't qualify for a free product update from the previous years version because it is not a subscription based product.  This would be why it doesn't show up in the update center, and why it directs you to the Symantec Store. You can purchase Norton System Works 2009 Basic Edition from the Symantec Store if you wish to use the newer version of the product.

The messaging on the Upgrade/Renewal page says the following:

We’re sorry. A subscription renewal is no longer available for your product.

Subscription renewals for this product and older versions are no longer available. The discontinuation is a normal part of our product cycles, and is made in the interest of providing the most up-to-date security products to our customers.

To continue your protection, we recommend upgrading to a newer version. You will receive a new subscription as well as the most current protection features available.

One of the upgrade discounted options available is a NIS2009+NSW2009 Basic Edition bundle which is available at a fraction of the original bundle price

Please do not confuse the above message with thinking that we are discontuning this product.

Let me know if this answers your question.

Since I posed the original question, I would say this answers the part about upsgrading from NSW 2008 to NSW 2009. I was finally able to upgrade NIS 08 to NIS09.

Thanks everyone for your input.

So that I understand correctly -- you did end up installing NSW Basic V12 (=2009)?

Thanks for the information about it -- I'm not the interested party except in general terms. I've just been trying to answer questions!

I'm not keeping up with responing , sorry. Even though my NSW 2008 expires in Jan.2009 I'm chosing to wait, for what I do not know!! But did the upgrade for NIS 2009. Thanks for your help.

No problem -- I know the feeling!

The situation is definitely that NSW Basic V12 does exist and you can buy an upload version from Symantec (or presumably buy a retail copy if a store has it and send in a rebate coupon) but that the free upgrade route from the 2008 V11 to the 2009 V12 is not available because this Basic version is not a subscription product.
