I am going to upgrade my Win10 computer to Win11 this week and I would like to know what I need to do concerning my Norton 360 in order to have a smooth installation. Do I need to uninstall Norton then reinstall it or do I need to turn off certain functions or just leave Norton alone while upgrading? I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Hello @Don54
fwiw ~ on my W10 to W11 machine
I clean uninstalled Norton 360 → confirmed Windows Security was running/current.
with W11 on-board…I ran Windows Security a few days before clean installing Norton 360.
fwiw ~ my preference is Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows here → Remove only…with scour File Explorer for remnants and CCleaner - Registry Tool - Scan for Issues + CCleaner…back up the registry before making changes.
AI Overview
Yes, you should remove Norton before upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 to prevent potential conflicts and ensure a smoother process, as Windows 11 has built-in security features that can interfere with third-party antivirus software. Use the official Norton 360 Remover tool for Windows for a complete uninstallation, as standard uninstallation methods may leave behind leftover files and drivers. After the upgrade, you can either use the robust built-in Windows Security (Defender) or reinstall an up-to-date version of Norton for continued third-party protection.
Why You Should Remove Norton First
Prevent Conflicts:
A third-party antivirus like Norton can sometimes cause conflicts with the operating system during the upgrade process, especially since Windows 11 already includes its own security features.
Avoid Security Risks:
While Norton is generally compatible with Windows 11, removing it before the upgrade removes any potential issues that could arise from the transition, ensuring your system is stable during the upgrade.
How to Safely Remove Norton
Back up your data: Before starting, it is always a good practice to back up all your important files and data, just in case anything unexpected happens during the upgrade process.
After the Upgrade Use Windows Security (Defender):
Windows 11 comes with built-in security features that provide excellent protection. You can simply use Windows Security (formerly Windows Defender) if you don’t want to use a third-party antivirus.
