Version 24 has removed local backup

Because the company is run by incompetent marketing people, apparently.

They don’t even ADDRESS the complaints.

Thanks for this tip, Robert. Understand You’ve to click the synchronization symbol after inserting again the local drive ( not NAS only, but USB drives, too) with an initial backup ?

Thanks for this tip, Robert. Understand You’ve to click the synchronization symbol after inserting again the local drive ( not NAS only, but USB drives, too) with an initial backup ?

You DO NOT have to press the synchronization button for NAS assuming your NAS and Device are on the same network with the drive available, I am not using USB but would guess YES You’ve to click the synchronization symbol after inserting again the local drive.

I am only using NAS

Synchronisation is Automatic per settings as noted below

You can force a Sync by pressing the button at any time as you have no schedule to know when a sync will happen.

From my experience so far system performance is not greatly impacted.

When a file is backed up, does it replace the last version/overwrite it or does it just make a new version so that if need be, one can recover the older version?

Hello @ter_bord
Norton Cloud Backup is designed to create copies (backups) of your files, not to act as a real-time mirror where changes on one device are instantly reflected on the other.

related: @ter_bord here

Note: with Automatic Sync…if you make x changes to a file between sync…only change at sync is backed up.
Note: an old version may still be on your machine. If you for example…copy a letter and make changes to that copy and then save that copy with changes…the original remains on your device and may be with backed up files.
Note: when a file is backed up at sync and then at some point you delete that file from your machine…you can presumably restore the backed up file to your machine.

Automatically sync runs every 24 hours. You may manually call Sync.

Maybe, think of Norton Cloud Backup as supplement to your primary/secondary backup solutions.

The 3-2-1 Backup Rule

  1. You should have three copies of your data at all times — one original, and two backups.
  2. Both backups should be on different storage mediums.
  3. One backup should be stored offsite.

===============================================

Automatically sync (as per Norton) backs up files every 24 hours. Norton has not shared whether 24 hour cycle is machine up time or 24 hour clock time.
User may manually run sync, as needed.

I imagine at the automatic sync time…whatever changes are at that time.

Norton Cloud Backup feature within Norton 360, is not a full system image backup.
Norton Cloud Backup functions as a file and folder backup, allowing you to selectively choose which specific files and folders to back up to the cloud, rather than capturing an entire snapshot of your entire system like a traditional system image backup would do.
Norton Cloud Backup lets you pick which files and folders to back up, giving you more control over what data is stored in the cloud.
While you can restore individual files from a Norton backup, you cannot use it to completely restore your entire operating system to a previous state like a system image backup would allow.

=======================================================

Note: Norton 360 cloud backup storage (e.g., 50 GB) is shared among all the devices covered by your subscription, allowing you to back up files from any of them using the same storage space. Norton Cloud Backup storage capacity (e.g., 50 GB) is allocated to your Norton account/subscription, not to individual devices. You can back up files from any of the devices covered by your Norton subscription to the shared cloud storage. If you have a 50 GB storage plan, all devices covered by your Norton plan will share that 50 GB for backups.

Correct, it replaces/overwrites to the actual version when You click the sync symbol (that one with the two rotating pointers). This works very fast as only revised or new files/folders will be added by cancelling the previous version.
If You wish to save the previous version You’ ve to run a new backup which is quite time and memory space consuming.
Pls note, I checked this with a local drive (USB stick) as I’m not interested in cloud backup.
Unfortunately Norton has eliminated the little red hook on the right bottom corner of the systray symbol reminding You from time to time to make a backup.

Hello @ter_bord

Hello @ter_bord

Norton is NOT Microsoft who has the ability to provide true cloud backup. So who are they using for their host? I would say most people that want to keep their data “private” won’t use the cloud as a solution and instead will find a way to backup locally to a HD/SSD or home Network device. This will put me on the list to dump Norton if they don’t fix this ASAP!

fix what?

The backups stored in the Norton Cloud are encrypted and can only be decrypted by access to the Norton Account that created the backup. So even if there were a data breach on the servers, there would only be gibberish available to the hackers.

This issue is not hackers. This issue is when the connection hiccups and you lose the backups altogether, which has happened with Norton before. Are they going to reimburse you for the loss? I don’t think so.

Network drive backups have been restored but they did not restore control over when you can do backups. It is only automated every 24 hours, which is still unacceptable IMO. Norton went total stupid with this version. As a result, I am still on version 22 found here. You can revert back to get the proper functionality back. So far, I have not been forced to re-upgrade:

Automatically sync every 24 hours or manual Synchronize.
You want a scheduler?

I want the same functionality that version 22 provided where I can set the schedule when the backups occur, backup to my server, and be able to monitor all of the administrative tasks to ensure everything is working and up to date.

Now Norton has rolled out the mobile version and right out of the gate, it has issues. I am getting “VPN setup required” notification every 60 damn seconds. Norton has become garbage. I started a separate topic for that issue.

Me too. I had used Norton for over 20 years. After this Moronic Product Manager BURNED ME and DESTROYED all my past Backup Sets, I WILL NEVER USE ANYTHING Norton, EVER AGAIN. Enough BETRAYAL.

Hey folks, it has been a year since I asked this question. I now see that Norton has restored 99% of the functionality from version 22. I see backups can use network drives and restore old backups from previous versions.I can now set schedules for scans, file cleanup, and disk optimization. What I still do not see is the ability to set a specific schedule for backups to run as in version 22. I prefer to set a schedule that is in the middle of the night weekly as several of my PCs take 45 minutes to an hour to back up. Anyone know if Norton is working this final piece of functionality, or are we stuck with “every 24 hours” or manual?

Any news on Norton finally fixing the new versions backup issues? If, not, would you have a recommendation on a replacement product, like McAffee, with similar/equivalent features for controls to perform local drive backups, inclusion/exclusion of files/folders, date and time of backup, recovery on other PCs, etc that were removed from Norton 360 after v22.24.8.36? I’ve stayed on v22.24.8.36, updating the Symantec virus list every day, and getting the feeling there is no intention at Norton to fix their mistake of removing all the required local backup features. I have 8TB of local data and it is unfeasible/unwanted to do this on the Cloud, especially having a 12TB very fast SanDisk for local backups. Norton product management, please state your position on fixing this issue that clearly is a dealbreaker for many of your current subscribers and something that is driving your clients to other products!

Below is a transcript with Norton 360 Support. Bottom line, they will respond via email to the critical question of what version will this be fixed on, and nothing about when it will be fixed. Below is the copy of the transcript, without the useless virtual agent answers.

16:37:05 Laxmi: As I can see above that our virtual assistant already shared the steps to backup to your local driver but that does not work and you are still facing the issue while doing backup with the latest Norton app.

16:37:42 Laxmi: In that case, if you allow I can connect to your device and assist you to do the same with the latest Norton app.

16:37:51 Laxmi: So may I know is that works for you ?

16:39:16 Consumer: Not as simple as that. I need the new versions of Norton to include the same features Norton 360 v22.24.8.36 to perform local drive backups (including neword drives mapped as a local drive letter), inclusion/exclusion of files/folders, date and time of backup, recovery on other PCs, compatibility with past backups, etc that were removed from Norton 360 60 v22.24.8.36. Been a faithful Norton client for more than 20 years and never had seen such critical features just be removed by a new version of software.

16:40:40 Consumer: from the community chats I see that the latest v26 still does not meet these requirements, and I have been waiting for about a year now for Norton to rectify their mistake.

16:41:14 Consumer: When will Norton 360 include these features again, working and without bugs?

16:41:51 Consumer: I have 8TB of local data and it is unfeasible/unwanted to do this on the Cloud, especially having a 12TB very fast SanDisk for local backups.

16:42:02 Laxmi: Please allow me couple of minutes to share the details with you.

16:43:27 Consumer: Just look at this thread, everybody is complaining. Version 24 has removed local backup - #154 by Mindwalker

16:46:55 Consumer: Plus I need to be certain that an upgrade to whatever version fixes these issues will work from v22.24.8.36 flawlessly, with perfect compatibility with past backups for restore or continuation of the set bacukp setup for all those v22.24.8.36 features.

16:47:25 Laxmi: Roberto Firstly, thank you for being with Norton for more than 20 years. I completely understand your frustration reliable local backups (including mapped drives), granular include/exclude controls, scheduling, restores on other PCs, and compatibility with prior backup sets are essential.

16:48:29 Laxmi: The good news is that Norton has started adding these features back in recent updates, and version 25.2 restores local and
network drive backup options for many customers. If you don’t see these options yet then I can surely assist you regarding the same. Norton is actively working to improve the backup experience so it matches what you were used to in the older v22 versions.

16:49:03 Laxmi: In that case, if you allow I can connect to your device and assist you to do the same with the latest Norton app. So may I know is that works for you ?

16:49:54 Consumer: Flawless upgrades from v22.24.8.36 backup settings etc is a must. When will all the v22.24.8.36 features be available? Right now I am on v22.24.8.36, and will stay there only if I know for certain there is a fix coming, and when it will be available.

16:50:43 Consumer: “Norton is working on it” needs a planned release date from the product roadmap to be credible, sorry to say.

16:51:54 Consumer: As I said, I have the features because I have reinstalled v22.24.8.36 and stayed there, will not allow anyone to upgrade this until there is a version that officially has all the features put back in.

16:54:13 Laxmi: Is there anything else I can assist you with ?

16:54:59 Consumer: Last automatic upgrade only had a CLoud Backup option, and I could not access my past backups for restore. I will not upgrade until there is certainty that the features are there, and will test it on a secondary machine to be sure. Yes, which is the planned release version number and date to have those v22.24.8.36 features included again?

16:57:56 Laxmi: 'I’m escalating this case to our senior team for a detailed review of the backup concerns. They will go through the issue thoroughly and share the necessary updates with you soon."

I am slowly seeing features return. I have a clean PC I put the latest version of Norton on and I can set schedules for all of the utilities. I can do a backup to a network drive. I just select Cloud Backup and it will allow you to select local drives. As long as the network drive is mapped, you can select it. My only issue now is you cannot set a specific day and time to run the backup. It runs automatically every 24 hours and is a resource hog when it runs. You can run it manually. All of my main PCs are still on 22.24, but I had to shut off Live Update and use this link (Security Center Download Detail) to install updates manually daily as Norton forces the latest version on you now. I even got an offensive email begging me to upgrade. I may go to the latest version and manually backup, but Norton still needs to fix this.

Never ever let someone have access to your computer. I have been asked every time I have an issue by Norton Support to allow access to my PC and have refused. If you have a tech issue then just use Revo or the removal tool and reinstall. You don’t know that there isn’t an infection on the Support Reps PC that could gain access to yours through Remote access tools. Remember they are dealing with infected PCs all day long and you don’t want some new variant even Norton isn’t aware off transferring to your machine.
