This new version has so much removed from it. I have reverted to the previous version twice. Most importantly there is no user specific location for back up. This is EXTREMELY unacceptable. I need over 400Gigs space to backup, which is way more than you provide. This must be put back or you will lose a long time customer. Who is your product owner? Fire them.
Hello @Mindwalker
Not acceptable. Will never use cloud backup.
Backing up to a local drive is not an option that I can find, I also do not see how I could use the new version to restore files/directories from all the historic backups of numerous PCs to many external hard drives that I have created using Norton. [And I have been a customer since the days when Peter Norton was selling Norton Utilities on floppy disks]
It’s not there. I spoke with Tech Support weeks ago and they gave me the previous version as the developers removed it. I now have to reinstall it every time they update the software. This has to be put back or I am leaving.
with the removal of local backup feature, this product is useless in protecting large amounts of data locally, this is nothing more than a forced removal of a feature that forces us into using $$$ to pay for a cloud account that i don’t want, i agree, fire all that were in the approval process and it would appear that there is not a product manager for this or it would have never been removed, no customer representation, just $$$ for Norton, well, this will be $$$ lost since i am moving off of this money sucking app
Exactly, and JamesW_Colbert is correct in that you cannot restore any of your previous backups from the previous version. I have 6 PCs that backup to a server weekly so I MUST have access to those to restore data. If this stays this way, I have to invest in backup software and pay separately for all 6 PCs. This is a dire money grab to show investors they have recurring revenue. Here is my middle finger.
This product team and new CEO really missed the mark but it is par for the course for these guys. Ever since the new CEO, they have removed features, Utilities and now backup and making his customers mad in the process. I can’t say this any nicer but these guys really are money grubbing scum.

Long contact with Norton support by telephone (via UK telephone number?). It seems the matter of no Back Up “straight to external hard drive” has been raised with Norton engineers due to volume of displeasure over this.
Only address to write to is one in Arizona USA (legal Team) !!
Suggest that members of the Norton Community do their best to get this out into the media and computer publications to raise awareness of the matter. If it hits Norton subscription wise by users not renewing then they may take notice.
Why oh why did they change something as good as Norton in such a way !
Yes, I agree. So, what happens to existing external backups?
All: Please read my post in another thread concerning the same issue as here. Even a drive that already contains a Norton Backup directory with a backup set is not detected. Hope that clarifies the issue a bit further. Support is missing the mark with confusing local drives ( internal ) with cache from cloud once full, with external drives.

I took a look at your thread and are you saying, once the cloud drive is full, it will allow you to set up a local backup? Does this mean we can ignore the cloud backup after that? I have 2 backup servers on my network that are mapped for this and I want to maintain that.
Acronis/macrium/todo Backup and and and buy.
this is infuriating. I have a message that my computer is at risk because it has not been able to complete the local backup, but there is no way for me to access the purported backup or to set or even SEE the backup location.
guess it’s time to go software hunting.
I will add my consternation and dismay at this latest update. As stated, not only are you compelled to backup to the cloud but, for those of us who are long time customers, restoring existing backup files is almost ridiculously difficult. I, like many here, primarily use external drives for backup. I have over a terabyte of files I’ve kept through the past few years. Although I can see these backup sets in the “Cloud Backup” window, all of them are greyed out and inaccessible. So, what are we supposed to do? Rating: F
@Mindwalker The answer to your post is NO. Once the cloud storage gets full backup will “cache” data to either drive C: or D: if you have another internal drive. What backup won’t allow is using ANY networked backup storage devices, won’t detect them. It also won’t detect any USB storage devices. No local “external or networked storage”. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks for the response but, no, that makes no sense from a design standpoint. If you are an existing user you have been sabotaged, in a sense. This is a poorly designed refresh of the existing software and leaves us stranded, so to speak. Also, I have tried syncing the cloud backup of my PC and it has failed every time so far (“backup sync has failed”). There is no reason given, nor any work around/solution suggested. At this point I cannot create a cloud backup, nor can I access the files I backed up with the previous version…Again, poor design and poor execution. Grade changed to F-
I agree with Mindwalker as I may be misreading your reply to Mindwalker’s. You make it sound like you must use the Cloud first and when it is full, then you can use a local drive, and I agree that is unacceptable as one should have the ability to save to a local drive or both if they wanted to. Some people do not trust the cloud as it may burp and then whatever they save may be lost. Now I know I can just avoid Norton’s cloud altogether and use a NAS to do my backups but not using your backup diminishes the value of your program if a user avoids using enough of your offerings.
Is the inability to detect network drives a problem that can’t be done as I see other programs can use network drives as like businesses mainly use networked drives and not just local drives. I the program can do it and Norton just do not want it, I feel Norton is not as modern as one would think it is.
