I’ve seen a lot of information on the forums regarding Vista SP1 and problems, but no clear answer to my question because I still have an option with SP1:

I currently have a computer with Vista Home Premium; SP1 has NOT been installed yet.  This computer has been happily running NIS 2007 (add-on pack included) with no issues. I now want to upgrade to NIS 2008.

What is the proper order?  Install NIS 2008 before Vista Service Pack 1 or SP1 and then NIS 2008?

Thanks for any advice.

On these forums, I have read about alot of “spurious” registry keys being created by Vista SP1 that can affect NIS 2008, so I am hoping to follow a recommended procedure to avoid any problems.

To be sure you could uninstall NIS2008 first –> install SP1 –> install NIS2008 again

Although Microsoft did issue a fixed file to stop the corruption with XP when SP3 is installed or with VISTA when SP1 is installed it is only being offered "on demand" as a hotfix.

The safest solution is to remove NIS, install SP1 and then reinstall NIS 2008 -- although you may be able to avoid this if you disable protection in NIS. I think you turn off AutoProtect in the Options which is under Real Time Protection. But I'm not sure about Protection for Norton Products which is in General Settings.

We released a patch a few weeks ago that should help you avoid the problem with the invalid registry keys. You can first upgrade to NIS 2008, get all the available updates through LiveUpdate (rebooting in between as needed), and then try to install Vista SP1. This will ensure that you have the latest patch for one of our components before installing Vista SP1.

sunnyc,

Will this patch come through automatically with Live Update, or do I have to apply it manually?

The patch should get installed automatically, but it might take some time. So I suggest that you run LiveUpdate manually from the NIS UI a few times until you see no more updates available for download. You might need to reboot your computer in between because some of the patches might need the reboot for getting applied properly.

I appreciate your advice and understand your instructions. I will not be able to get to this until Saturday, but I shall report back with my results.

Thanks for your time.

Because this patch requires a reboot, it will NOT get installed automatically. Manually running LiveUpdate, though, will get it for you right away.

Thanks. I shall run Live Update manually.

Could you just remind me whether turning off AutoProtect was the workaround at the time and whether or not Protect Norton Appications is relevant or not to avoiding having to uninstall NIS?

Original work around is posted in this message. If all patches are applied, this should no longer be necessary.

Report on my results: It looks like huwyngr had the closest answer; but it took a while to realize that.

I installed NIS 2008 BEFORE installing Vista SP1 and ran Live Update manually until notified that NIS was up to date. Norton Control Center said everything was running smoothly, BUT then I got a Windows Security Center Warning that I had no Firewall or Antivirus protection – I even got a Norton pop-up window saying the same. Checked NIS Control Center and it reported everything good. I performed a few restarts just to be sure, but the same warnings still showed.

I then installed Vista SP1 to see if that would cure the problem and after it rebooted the computer, everything seemed fine until I performed another reboot. Then I got the same Windows and Norton pop-up warnings even though the NIS Control Center said OK.

I used the Norton removal tool and then reinstalled NIS 2008 (Vista SP1 is installed at this point) and so far everything seems to be working okay.

So, for my Vista Home Premium computer the order was: Vista SP1, then NIS 2008. I should note that I installed NIS 2008 on two XP (SP2) machines earlier in the day and those installs could not have been easier – I figured I’d breeze right through the Vista install – wrong!  Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks for the feedback -- I'd BTDT ....

I suspect you may have the problem if you now update the XPs to SP3 unless by now MS have changed the critical file in SP3 although I have been told that they never change the contents of a SP even if it contains a dud file -- which surprises me. There has been a fix to NIS2008 so maybe a fully updated one is OK now. I'm not sure about that.

I’m in no rush for XP SP3.  I’ll wait a bit longer and maybe more bugs will be ironed out.

I think SP3 is OK for XP now, but I'd be inclined to disable AutoProtect while installing it, but some of the other updates since SP3 are not without problems I gather.

I'm not sure it really matters.

I myself would install SP1 first and than Norton 2008
