Detailed description:

Product & version number: Norton 360

OS details: Android

My VPN keeps running itself off. How can I run the VPN all the time? I have the kill switch enabled but it does not disconnect the internet when the VPN is not on. I have auto connect disabled.

The kill switch only disconnects from the internet when the VPN is active/turned on and the connection to the VPN server is interrupted. If you have turned off the VPN the internet connection will always be enabled.

I have found that as long as you have manually turned on the VPN, it will stay on until you turn it off. The only thing that might change that is if you restart your device.

Hello Peterweb

I am sorry, I wasn’t very clear in my post about my issue.

The VPN turns off for no apparent reason, when it does, although I have kill switch enabled, the internet is not turned off/ disconnected. I can still access the internet and have no idea the VPN is no longer protecting my internet connection.

So I have two problems:

  1. The VPN turns off by it’s own violation.

  2. When it does, the kill switch does not activate.

This is when I am in my house using my home internet connection.

Thank you.

For your home network, do you really need a VPN? Do I need a VPN? 6 reasons you should get one

Check your Auto Connect settings for the VPN. If that is turned on, it will turn off the VPN for a secured network like your home network. Try turning that off and then manually turn on the VPN and test to see if it stays on.

Hello Peter,

Auto Connect is turned off, but the VPN still randomly turns itself off. I would like to have auto connect enabled, as it seems a sensible thing to do. Funnily enough, auto connect was enabled this morning when I turned my phone on and the VPN was off, I hadn’t turned auto connect on. It’s a mystery!

If you want the Auto Connect turned on, it is going to turn off the VPN when connected to any secured wifi.

Try this.

  1. Turn off Auto connect.
  2. Turn on the VPN.
  3. Restart your device.
  4. Test again.

Hi Peter, autocorrect wasn’t on but I turned it on then off, manually turned on the VPN and restarted my phone. After the restart the VPN was on, 5 minutes later it was off! I’m not sure what’s going on!

Out of curiosity, you mention you are using the VPN feature of Norton 360. Do you also have the standalone Norton Secure VPN app installed? If so, try uninstalling that VPN app and restart the device and test.

If you do not have the two apps installed, please send logs to Norton for diagnosis. Use the information from this Norton Support article.

Hello Peter.

I don’t have the stand-alone VPN installed, I use the VPN that comes with 360 Premium. I’ve enabled the debugging log and will wait until the VPN turns off then send in the logs. I’ve sort of solved the problem by enabling auto protect and turning on Cyberghost VPN, CG VPN has stayed on all day. This might well be a good solution for me as I would prefer to have a vpn on at all times.

If you have had Cyberghost installed all along, that could be part of the problem you are seeing with the Norton VPN.

Sometimes having more than one VPN app can cause conflicts, especially if they are both monitoring your network in the background.

Hi Peter, Cyberghost is installed but is not running.
