Vulnerable Dell DBUtil Driver Puts Millions of Systems At Risk

From Ionut Ilascu's 04-May-2021 Bleeping Computer article Vulnerable Dell Driver Puts Hundreds of Millions of Systems at Risk:

A driver that’s been pushed for the past 12 years to Dell computer devices for consumers and enterprises contains multiple vulnerabilities that could lead to increased privileges on the system. It is estimated that hundreds of millions of Dell computers, from desktops and laptops to tablets, received the vulnerable driver through BIOS updates.

Five flaws in one

A collection of five flaws, collectively tracked as CVE-2021-21551, have been discovered in DBUtil, a driver from that Dell machines install and load during the BIOS update process and is unloaded at the next reboot... This type of vulnerability is not considered critical because an attacker exploiting it needs to have compromised the computer beforehand. However, it allows threat actors and malware to gain persistence on the infected system....

The Dell security advisory DSA-2021-088: Dell Client Platform Security Update for an Insufficient Access Control Vulnerability in the Dell dbutil Driver (last updated 04-May-2021) states the following and includes instructions on how to locate and remove the vulnerable dbutil_2_3.sys driver, if present.  Table A at the bottom of that advisory also has a list of affected Dell computer models.

The vulnerability exists in the dbutil_2_3.sys driver. This driver file may have been installed on your Dell Windows operating system when you used firmware update utility packages, Dell Command Update, Dell Update, Alienware Update, Dell System Inventory Agent, or Dell Platform Tags, including when using any Dell notification solution to update drivers, BIOS, or firmware for your system. To best protect yourself, Dell recommends removing the dbutil_2_3.sys driver from your system by following one of three options listed in Remediation Step 1 below.

Kudos to Microfix for posting about this in the AskWoody Lounge yesterday at Dells Bells on Horseback!.

Hi bjm_:

Sorry, when you said that "I did not find any SnapShots > ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\SnapShots" I didn't realize that you were browsing with File Explorer.

If I browse to the hidden folder C:\ProgramData\Dell with File Explorer (after enabling View | Hidden Items) and select the SARemediation subfolder I see the following warning, even if I am logged in with a Windows account that has Administrator rights.

Yeah, using File Explorer.  I can usually go past the warning with Continue.   I can see inside SARemediation.  I can see inside SARemediation\SystemRepair.  Inside SARemediation\SystemRepair....all I saw then and now is Config folder.   I have File Explorer > View > File name extensions checked & Hidden items checked.

Your pointing me to TreeSize was a fortunate, light bulb moment.   Thanks
Yeah, with my light bulb moment via TreeSize.  I imagined Dell via File Explorer hides Dell files.

Maybe, I'll toggle System Repair back on to confirm Dell via File Explorer hides Dell files.
Since, I've usually run Dell Services at Manual.  I've usually tried to ignore Dell Tools.
Just me.

I assume the permissions for that C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation folder are deliberately restricted by Dell SupportAssist Remediation / OS Recovery in File Explorer to prevent accidental corruption or deletion of Dell repair points / snapshots (i.e., similar to the System Volume Information folder in the root of C:\ that stores Windows system restore points and is both hidden and protected from users as well as Administrators).  Instead of clicking Continue and changing the ownership of the folder I just clicked Cancel and viewed the contents in TreeSize Free (after enabling View | Hidden Items in File Explorer).  The TreeSize support article Show Alternate Data Streams (ADS) notes that "TreeSize facilitates the search for hidden disk space such as content attached as Alternate Data Streams, which are invisible to most other programs" so I always use TreeSize if I want to look for folders or files that might be hoarding disk space. Andre Da Costa's groovyPost article Use TreeSize to Map Hard Drive Usage and Find Huge Files on Windows 10 is a good place to start if you aren't familiar with this utility.

Hi bjm_:

Note that System Repair can also be turned on or off in your Dell SupportAssist settings. When I turned off System Repair from my Dell SupportAssist settings on 04-May-2021 it automatically purged the files in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ with the following warning:

It looks like you already found your own method for purging these old snapshots from the SupportAssist OS Recovery panel at Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings, but Dell employee DELL-Chris M's instructions SA Uninstall/Reinstall are pinned at the top of the SupportAssist board in the Dell Community and now include a section on manually deleting these SupportAssist snapshots.  I assume this manual removal should only be done after Dell SupportAssist (and associated programs like Dell SupportAssist Agent, Dell SupportAssist Update Plugin, and Dell SupportAssist Remediation) have been uninstalled from the Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features per those instructions

Maybe your Dell Update application just needs a reinstall.  I was trying to fix some odd behaviour with Dell Update last year and Dell customer support suggested I uninstall using Revo Uninstaller Free and then purging my Windows Temp files before reinstalling - see my 09-Feb-2020 thread Inspiron 5584 - Dell Update Notification "The system has been updated" for more information.  I've switched from the old Win32 version called Dell Update Application to the UWP version called Dell Update Application for Windows 10, and I find the UWP version seems to behave better on my system.

Appreciate additional pics.

Yeah, I ran a few stand-alone Update Packages last year.  Don't recall why.
Dell Update 4.2.0 seems to be working ...albeit, CCleaner appears to report remnants.
IDK if I have Win32 version or UWP version.

I had no idea regarding Dell SnapShots.
Appreciate, you pointing me in that direction.
I had System Repair at Minimum from July 2019 without realizing whats what with System Repair.
I became aware thru Dell Boards in 2019 that Dell Tools have, to be kind, mixed reviews.  I considered uninstalling Dell Tools from reading messages from upset Dell users.  I opted to run Dell Services Manual....basically, opting to ignore Dell Tools.
I was disappointed with HP Tools so, in my mind ....why mess with Dells Tools after my service plan expired.

As always.  I'm blown away by your contributions. Thanks, as always.

Yikes - I had no idea 30.6 GB ? Where the he ll is this 30.6. GBs?

Prior to 04-May-2021 I had System Repair enabled in my Dell SupportAssist settings as shown above with the default 15 GB of allocated disk space (and the Dell SupportAssist Remediation set to its default Automatic (Delayed Start)] and I had enough space to hold about 19 snapshots.  Note that I temporarily set the Start Type of my SupportAssist Remediation service to Disabled for a few days of testing for 29-Apr-2021 to 01-May-2021, which is why snapshots are missing for those dates. As shown below, the files in C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots\Backup normally take up about 65% of my entire C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder, but I think this percentage varies depending on the number of installed programs (e.g., with .msi and .exe installers) you have on your computer.

I assume this manual removal should only be done after Dell SupportAssist (and associated programs like Dell SupportAssist Agent, Dell SupportAssist Update Plugin, and Dell SupportAssist Remediation) have been uninstalled from the Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features per those instructions.

Your Dell is better than my Dell -
With your help - I'm now aware that "Restore System" is a visual clue that a system restore point was created.

Imacri:
I currently have the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service disabled for testing so the System Repair feature of Dell SupportAssist (part of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools) is currently not creating system snapshots in the hidden folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots on my system.  I doubt you have any large system snapshots in that folder if all your Dell services are normally set to Manual, but you might want to check the contents of that folder and see if anything was created there.

btw ~ I tested 3rd party creating restore points -

Hi bjm_:

I don't know. Perhaps your system couldn't create a restore point because you were using Dell Update to self-update to a higher version.

I have System Restore turned on in Win 10 at Control Panel | System and Security | System | System Protection | Protection Settings | Configure, and CCleaner Free (Tools | System Restore) shows my last restore point was created by Dell Client Management Services on 21-May-2021 @ 5:25:19 PM while Dell SupportAssist v3.9.0 was installing Dell Update v4.2.0. As you said, the Dell update utilities sometimes work in strange and mysterious ways, so don't ask me to explain why an earlier restore point was created at 5:24:31 PM. The 12-May-2021 restore point in the image below was created when Windows Update installed my May 2021 Patch Tuesday updates.

When I view that folder with TreeSize Free (after enabling View | Hidden Items in File Explorer):

Hi bjm_:

Just a note that I ran a manual "Get Drivers & Downloads" check from the Home tab of Dell SupportAssist (DSA) v3.9.0.234 today, which detected and successfully installed an update for Dell Update v4.2.0.

After the install ran to completion I noticed a message in the DSA interface that said "Restore point created."...

... and when I checked the DSA history it confirmed this update package had created a restore point.

Wonder what SupportAssist reports if user has restore point turned off?  Or, if restore point cannot be created for whatever reason.

Thanks

...As far as I know those Restore System links in the Dell SupportAssist history are just a visual cue to let you know that a system restore point was created prior to the start of the update installation (i.e., similar to the way that iTunes64Setup.exe creates a Windows system restore point on my system before it starts installing a downloaded update for my iTunes software)....

As far as I know those Restore System links in the Dell SupportAssist history are just a visual cue to let you know that a system restore point was created prior to the start of the update installation. As far as I can tell only certain Dell update packages trigger the creation of a restore point - I tend see them more often with major updates (e.g., firmware updates for my BIOS and Toshiba SSD, full 580 MB updates for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools, etc.).  A recent minor update to Dell Power Manager Service v3.8.0 on 01-May-2021, for example, did not generate one of these Restore System links in my Dell SupportAssist history.

Today, I'm not finding Failed with Restore System mentioned [here]. ...Restore System ....remains head scratch.

Hi bjm_:

Thanks for pointing me to the .txt files in C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\UpdatePackage\log.  I didn't realize there was a separate log created each time a Dell .exe update package is run.

As far as I know those Restore System links in the Dell SupportAssist history are just a visual cue to let you know that a system restore point was created prior to the start of the update installation (i.e., similar to the way that iTunes64Setup.exe creates a Windows system restore point on my system before it starts installing a downloaded update for my iTunes software). The same applies for the blue "Check for Updates" button on the support page <here> for my Inspiron 5584, which doesn't work correctly unless the Dell SupportAssist service is running and those Privacy settings in Dell SupportAssist are enabled (see my 04-Mar-2020 post in Caramel4406's Dell Support Website Doesn't Recognize That SupportAssist Is Installed). Dell Update, Dell SupportAssist and the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (a.k.a. I have a Win 10 Pro OS and also stopped Windows Update from delivering any firmware or hardware drivers [Local Group Policy Editor (run gpedit.msc) | Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update | Do Not Include Drivers With Windows Updates | ENABLED] after Windows Update delivered updates for my Toshiba SSD firmware and Intel graphics drivers that weren't certified on the support page <here> for my latest Inspiron 5583/5584 BIOS. However, you said you use WuMgr (Update Manager for Windows) to manage your Windows Updates so I assume that controlling firmware and driver updates probably isn't as big a concern for you.
