Hello all,
As my nickname says, I am totally blind from birth and use a Windows pc with a screen reader to do my job. I have been using Norton Internet Security for more than 8 years and I can continue to use it with Windows XP.
However, when I upgraded to Windows 8.1, I discovered that NIS is not accessible to me; people tell me that the same happens when using Windows 7.
I have bought a three-year license some months ago and I would like to be able to use Norton again, since I believe it's the best antivirus software on the market.
Since I'm a computer programmer, I understand that sometimes accessibility might compromise the security of the software, but the few tips I propose below are very safe and extremely helpful to me; just these tips will allow me to use NIS again:
1. Please include the current status in the Window Title.
Now it just says: "Norton Internet Security".
In the model I propose, it would say:
"Norton Internet Security - SAFE"
or
"Norton Internet Security - RISK"
or
"Norton Internet Security - Should Restart your pc"
This will let me know the security status of my pc, even if I can't have access to the data inside the NIS window.
2. Since most of the basic commands to control Norton, such as "Quick Scan" and "Update" are already shown in the task bar, I can execute them from there as usual. But once I execute them, I need to know if they are executing or execution has finished and the finishing status.
This could be also shown on the Window Title of each command window.
For example,
"Norton Update - in progress"
or
"Norton Update - successfully completed"
or
"Norton Update - should restart"
or
"Norton Update - not all updates succeeded"
If this is complicated, you could show me the status in a message box when I try to close the Window, such as "process in progress, do you close this window?".
The window would close without showing any dialog only when the process finished successfully.
3. I would like to execute also Full Scan from the task bar.
4. I would like to be able to save a report of the PC security status in txt from the task bar. When I click on "report status", it would open a save dialog from where I could save the data in a txt file in the drive and folder I want.
I don't ask for other functions to be accessible, such as activation and installation, because these functions are needed only once in a while, perhaps once in the whole year, and I can ask my wife to help me with them.
If you could add these features to Norton, I think most blind people will start buying it. One in five hundred is totally blind but there are many more people with weak sight that need to use screen readers. All screen readers can access the Window Text, so the accessibility of Norton will be very high.
Features 1 and 2 are essential. I would like to have features 3 and 4, but I can do without them.
Thanks and best regards.
