Hi everyone! My name is Matt and I recently picked up a nice old MPC Transport X1000 laptop 2.2ghz processor, gig of ram, 40 gig HD, and cd/dvd plus it has a cool biometrics touch chip finger print security feature. The laptop came loaded with Windows 2000 SP4 and I am comfortable messing with windows 2k because it is what I used when I was in the military. I have loaded Norton System Works 2001 which I purchased years ago and it is working well, I downloaded all of the updates that were available. I figured I'd see what was out there to upgrade to and found that System Works 2005 is the most current upgrade I can run on Win 2k.
I am hoping that some of the knowledgeable people here can advise me on what the benifits would be of upgrading from systemworks 2001 to 2005? Thanks for any and all assistance.
Matthew
I think perhaps the first question is what do you really need in SystemWorks and is it in the later version?
If part of the answer is AntiVIrus protection including things like malware then the next question is whether the earlier version, even with any on-line definition updates, gives you that protection and if not is it in the later version.
If you are running on an NTFS file system (I'm not sure if you have an option not to with W2K) you really don't need Nortons disk checking since NTFS does a remarkable job of repairing itself and there is a disk check built into Windows.
Stuff like Cleansweep I used to use but honestly it isn't necessary -- Does W2K have Disk Clean on the Properties tag of a hard drive? If so use that together with the Clean up options in Internet Explorer. I did like the Cookie utility in Cleansweep because I had one cookie for Compuserve that used to disable itself by inserting NOVK into the text and this was an easy way to find that cookie and edit it -- but that was a special situation and really no longer applies. People tend to be neurotic about cookies <g>
You maay find this table helpful:
Compatibility of Symantec consumer products with Microsoft Windows operating systems
from which it would seem that NSW 2006 is the latest to be compatible with W2K -- or NAV 2006 / NIS 2006
Hope that helps.
