I always thought Beta was an old computer language. Why are most of the community forums referencing “Beta”?
"Beta" is used in three ways here:
Norton Users Discussion Forum – BETA
refers to the actual structure of the forum, the facilities for messaging and inserting images and so on
And
which refers to a Forum to deal with products that are still at the beta stage but open to public trial -- as for NIS and NAV 2009 until just over a month ago
As well as
which is a specific product or service that is still at beta stage of development.
Hope that clears up the mixed usage here. The first one is the misleading one since we don't really need to know that they might improve or change the forum structure and mechanics .... as long as it works and, like any beta, that they do it my way <s>
Both of those responses do help me understand your use of the term "Beta".
My only real question then is trying to figure out which forum I should go to when I have questions.
1. Does it depend on the year of the product I am using?
2. Does it depend on my personal knowledge of the product(s)?
This should then answer my question completely, I hope.
Normally, if you are using a beta product you know that and have been directed where to post so the general answer is to post in that first group with at present BETA in the name.
A minor exception is the Norton Labs group which is for really experimental stuff that they are letting us know about -- a great idea -- so if you download the device from their website then you post in their Forum.
Year has nothing to do with it!
OK, no one has directed me to post anywhere and don’t know if my product is BETA. In that case, should I be posting questions to a different community board???
If you bought and paid for your product, then you don’t (hopefully!) have a beta version. Which means you should post in the “Norton Users Discussion Forum – BETA”.
Where to post does not depend on what year (version) the product is that you are using or your personal knowledge of the product.
The other forums here (like “Norton Public Beta Forum”) are for people participating in those programs, and these individuals are fully aware that they are participating in beta testing pre-release products.
So for example, if you have a version of Norton Internet Security that you purchased in a store in 2007, you’ll probably want to post in the “Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus” threads in the “Norton Users Discussion Forum – BETA” message board. (Where our fantastic forum members will probably ask you to upgrade to the 2009 version and see if your problem still exists. Be sure to give them as much information as possible upfront to help troubleshoot the issue.)
You can also use the forums search function to see if someone has already posted information about the issue you are experiencing.

OK, so if I have Norton SystemWorks Standard Edition 2007, what community group should I post questions in? My last question, honest.
I ended up here only because I had a support questions, which I have since forgotten, and needed my product year. I didn't remember what it was and couldn't find it anywhere (I have since figured it out.) and you couldn't get into support without it.
Your post would go under the Other Norton products category, since Norton SystemWorks doesn’t have it’s own board.
But first I strongly urge you to use the forums search function to see if someone has already posted information about the issue you are experiencing.

In that first Norton Users Discussion Forum – BETA group but Norton System Works is dealt with under Other Norton Products primarily because its emphasis is on the tools rather than the Norton AntiVIrus that is built into the other than Basic version.
I'd certainly recommend updating and the latest version of NSW does not carry a year as an identifier but is V12.

(Oops, I lied, it wasn't my last question).
Your product isn't in the beta phase of its lifecycle; This bulletin board that we're all using right now IS in its beta phase. We label "Norton Users Discussion Forum – BETA" as "beta" to help people understand that glitches may happen while using the forums and changes may occur; as we figure out what's working, what isn't working, and how we want to manage and moderate these forums.
Your question about Norton SystemWorks belongs under: "Other Norton products." But again, use the search function beforehand to potentially save yourself both time and energy.
