Please submit the file to Symantec Malware Submission
This way you can be sure
I recently downloaded a file and executed it. It didn't do anything and later, suspecting foul play, I deleted it. Then, with an updated version of Norton Internet Security on my pc, I tried downloading it again. Norton said Virus Detected.
If this file contains a virus (as Norton suggests it does), how do I know the virus isn't on my pc already? Norton scan doesn't indicate anything - but without any details given by Norton of the type of virus in this file, how do I know whether my pc is clean?
Maybe the file doesn't have a malicious virus and so it never got anywhere...
Maybe I needn't worry because if Norton can detect the virus in the file, it can do so if its in my system - and since it didn't detect anything during the scan, all is well...
Any ideas?
"..Then, with an updated version of Norton Internet Security on my pc, I tried downloading it again. Norton said Virus Detected."
Norton has probably just released definitons for the virus/s contained in this file if the malware was not detected earlier.
Run Live Update and then do a Full System Scan. If any infected files are remaing on your PC, your NIS product should identify them, and delete them.
Do as Stu says and submit the file to Symantec for analysis if you are still unsure, and keep your virus definitions up to date.
Seems you should be safe from infection.
Edit: You seem to be anxious if this particular file is malicious or if the virus detected by your Norton product was unrelated to this file.
In this case, do an Online Kaspersky File Scan , this should tell you if the file is malicious. To see if Symantec has regonised this file as malicious, do a Virus Total File Scan .
John, thanks! Your information was very helpful. I was working on Stu's suggestion but getting stuck, since I only had the file in an email and I wasn't being allowed to download it now. The link to virustotal looks like just what is required, since I can forward the email to their scan provision. Let's hope they send me the information I seek.
My pc appears to be clean - all scans run fine. The reason I'm pursuing this is because I know the file (.com file) was downloaded on the pc and I know it was executed. So obviously, I want to know the potential of the virus in it. I have a feeling it didn't do anything - which is probably why its manifestation cannot be detected by the scans, but I need to know for certain. Let's hope I get the answers back from virustotal.
I guess it would help if Norton would also gave the virus name when it detected one, so as to allow the user to then investigate the potential harm it has caused - or - more importantly - it can cause!
Thanks again.
It might help people answer if you said the name of the file you downloaded.
Also what version of Norton Internet Security you have -- year and version (click on Help & Support / About ) and confirm that you do update it regularly.
