When running the NPE it recommends me to remove winword.exe

Hi all,

Today, when I got back to the office and started up my PC, it recommended me to download and run the NPE (Norton Power Eraser). When I did the NPE suggested that it should remove Winword.exe... I often use that program, and my question is if why the NPE prompted me to remove it!

The NPE also recommended me to remove 3 other items, of which I chose 2 leaving Winword.exe untouched.

Now, I'm a bit paranoied... so, my question to the community is if anybody else has had the same experience? Not the paranoia... :-) but the NPE recommending you to remove the Winword.exe file.

HiTilleTeamM,

My gut feeling tells me I may run afoul of Quads, but I will ask a simple - where is the winword.exe file located that the NPE wants to remove?

Hi,

I am new to NIS, but not computers.   I have only been using NIS for about 10 days, so still reading and learning.  This is from the Help book (downloaded from Norton) -- page 59...

About Norton Power Eraser
Norton Power Eraser is a powerful removal tool that
can help you clean up the security risks that are
difficult to remove from your computer. If a program
hijacked your computer and you have difficulty in
removing it, Norton Power Eraser helps you remove
the security threat from your computer.
Norton Power Eraser includes detection and removal
capabilities for the security risks that impersonate
legitimate applications. The tool uses more aggressive
techniques than your Norton security product; hence
there is a risk that it may flag legitimate programs for
removal. You should carefully review the scan results
page before removing any files.

Lots of info to read in this booklet -- total 546 pages....

Thanks,

Fred

NPE often takes Quads out of the picture because it often removes things he needs to fully diagnose and remove the malware.

When you find the questionable Winword file, right click on it in my computer or Windows Explorer. Ten choose to scan with Norton. That should put your mind to rest.

NPE often reports false positives. That is why it should really only be used by those that know what they are doing. You wisely left Winword until you could check it out.

You should upload a copy of it here for a second opinion.

If it is a false positive it should be reported before NPE breaks everyones copy of Word.
