When using wmp v11 does it always have to access the net

Hi All

When I used windows media player to view a video( put on a DVD-R disc then put in my DVD slot)There was a new firewall rule created for it?Does wmp11 have to access the net everytime I view a DVD disc that has nothing to do with the net?I don't want any programs that I'm using to keep accessing the net if they don't have to be doing it.I have no Idea about firewalls so any help gratefully received with  plain instructions thanks.

Thanks Rohit1gupta

The DVD-R disc had been made from a video camera then onto a DVD player then Into my pc which I'm now trying to work out how to copy it,the video camera is pre USB so hence all the long winded way of doing things, thats why I used wmp to view it.Will blocking it permenantly harm the program?or for someone non techie like me option number 2 would be easier? Thanks for the pointers.

There is no harm as any update will b available for download separately at windows site.

Moreover, u can any time go to firewall properties and unblock it.

Blocking it will only ensure that it doesn't connect to net, no effect on functionality will b there.

Hi Rohit

I don't know exactly how to use NIS 2009 firewall, how to block a program?Good news for you guys in the cricket :smileywink:

Its simple

1. open norton protection centre, click on settings

2. then click on internet setting

3. scroll to bottom and c an option of smart firewall

4. under it there is an option of program control and a configure[+] button clik it

5. u can allow/block programs there.

Hope, it will solve ur prob.

For future ref copy and paste this procedure in a notepad.

WMP also needs to connect to check for copyrights when you are playing a CD. You do not need to block it with NIS. The options to stop this are in WMP.

Sure sounds like the long way around to me.

When I absolutely don't want any connection to the internet, I unplug my cable from the computer.  My wireless is on a switch, so it stays off unless I put it on.

Mo, is this one of those

"an instance of....is preparing to access the internet" type of messages?

Hi NY1986

No there was an actual firewall rule created. Its probally just me not knowing how the WMP works. Thanks to all for their advice.

Unfortunately you cant uninstall windows media player and you should be able to.

But here a what to do get Media Player Classic ~http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358~

and the cccp community codec pak and you'll be able to play anything note this all free ware with no spyware or snitch ware.

Also there is the cheap but non free corecodec pak ~http://www.coreavc.com/ which is supposed to play hi def.

Lastly VLC ~http://www.videolan.org a very good player but not as cool or versital as MPC.

I rolled wmp11 back to v10 so i could disable it  now i dont get the your under attack warning anymore cause i dont use

windows media spyware and i also file wiped the exe's of windows media connect so they wouldnt run anymore either.

Now i will tell you i have all the big name pro versions of all players- i paid way to much money for them to need a  different codec for each player except realplayer which promptly downloaded some virus's for me a couple days ago.

MPC plays mpeg4's better than quicktime pro does because its not triple checking every frame for a legitimacy code.

My nero showtime player with correct codec wont play mp4's.

Man save your self mega hassle and get MPC it plays all including Matroska files, it might even play blu ray but i dont know for sure so dont quote me on it.

Good Luck
