I know I can do it manually but I want to test the auto download of the upgrade. I have a couple of family members that also use NIS and I need to know if I can let them do the automatic upgrade instead of me having to go to them and install it manually as I have in the past.

You can directly upgrade to NIS 2012 through new version check (right click on NIS tray icon or by going to Support from the Main User Interface and clicking on New Version Check).

Yes, I am aware of this but as I said I want to test the auto update. I'm hoping the auto update will just be a msg that an update is available, click yes to install. I have personally had problems in the past with updates from within the browser so I don't want to take a chance my family members will go that route and then run into problems that I'm forced to go and fix.
Unless the action has been turned off -- which is provided for those who do not want it on principle or are on restricted bandwidth for example -- what is supposed to happen is that the files to carry out the upload will be downloaded in the background without asking you and after downloading you get an notice that this has been done, do you want to install?
I don't know what happens if you leave this action ON but the computer is not being monitored all the time -- does the notice stay up until you deal with it or does it fade away and if so does it comeback again ...
Also I don't know whether turning off the Norton Task Notification popups affects this or not;
If no-one pops in with the answer I'll ask Norton Staff about this.
huwyngr's information sounds correct. Unless you disabled the the delivery of NIS upgrades (Settings | Miscellaneous | Automatic Download of New Versions | OFF), LiveUpdate should have downloaded the installation file and then presented you with a pop-up asking you if you want to upgrade to NIS 2012 (see Tim Lopez's excellent post here).
Is it possible you got the LiveUpdate pop-up and clicked the Don't show this message again in the pop-up window? This would remove the downloaded installation file from your hard drive and you would stop receiving intermittent pop-ups asking if you would like upgrade to NIS 2012 (which is what happens when you choose Remind me later). If you declined with the Don't show this message again option, I believe you would have to upgrade from Support | New Version Check as noghere described.
There is more information on the Norton Update Agent (NUA) here that controls this upgrade (at least NUA did for the NIS 2010 to NIS 2011 upgrade), but I couldn't find any information on whether it's also possible to disable this NUA pop-up message from the NIS settings.

I wonder, if Symantec is holding up current automatic updates for V2012, because of the issues known now.
For your family members, i think it would be wise to wait untill he next major update adressing the current issues, which will be more stable than the current release. It might save you some travelling time.

Hi bgc99:
Sorry, I have a dial-up connection and always have Automatic Download of New Versions turned off in my settings. I just assumed that Symantec had already pushed NIS 2012 out to existing NIS 2011 users. Hope my response didn't create too much confusion.

No confusion. It would be nice for an official response from Symantec. I haven’t followed 2012 threads too closely but it sounds like there are issues best avoided for the time being anyway. Thanks, BGC
I have been promised a reply but it may not come until after the weekend ....
I hate to say it but maybe "Be thankful for small mercies ...." although I've not had any of the problems people are apparently having with NIS 2012 but then I have never used Identity Safe where the most serious seem to be focussed.
Allow me to explain what's going on. I'll keep it simple enough that I don't give away any trade secrets, but detailed enough to hopefully answer your question.
The automatic download is managed by a utility we call the Norton Update Agent (NUA). Here's an article that explains what it is, and what you can do to manually install the latest version:
NUA is downloaded silently by Automatic Live Update (ALU). It comes down silently, checks if you can be updated, and if so, it silently downloads the updated version. When the download is complete, it asks you if you would like to install the new version.
There are many different "flavors" of our product. We call these "layouts" It may have come with your laptop. You may have purchased it at a retail store. Your ISP may provide you a copy. We target different layouts at different times with NUA.
In order to test if NUA is running, you would need a tool to look at what ALU has downloaded, a tool to check the status of NUA, and the schedule of which layouts are being targeted. Unfortunately, these tools and the schedule are not available to the public.
For these reasons, it's not possible for you to be able to test or know when NIS 2011 will automatically download NIS 2012. Also, depending on which layout you have, it may never happen.
Methinks that needs to be mentioned on the GUI or in Help since it's a function we can disable ..... and if enabled one automatically considers it will happen especially so long after 2012 was released?
Well, I have the retail boxed version of NIS 2011 so I’m sure it will get upgraded eventually. I don’t understand why the schedule of the upgrades would be a trade secret. Anyway, case closed.
I think it's not so much the when that is the trade secret but how they determine whether it is a good idea or not to download something on your machine that if you go ahead and install it might trigger something unwanted due to specific nature of your hardware or system environment.
At least that's how I interpret it..
Personally I'm not in favor of having major stuff like version changes downloaded onto my machine without my knowing in advance and that's why I set Windows Update to Inform me of updates but neither download nor install unless and until I ask it.
In view of the list of updates for WIndows systems today I think that's a good idea!
And of course you can click on Version Update I presume and force the update ....
NIS doesn’t automatically install the upgrade, it asks you if you want to. The point of this thread seems to have been lost at this point. No need to keep this going.
