When will NIS 2012 be safe to install?

Hello all,

While logged in to my standard user account (no administrator privileges) , I received notification that a new product update is available for upgrading from NIS 2011 to NIS 2012.  However, I'm not so sure I want to upgrade right now, given the number of forum users who have already posted messages with issues about NIS 2012.

I have two questions:

  • When will NIS 2012 really be ready for me to install (Windows XP Home, 32-bit)?  I don't want to install it now and then have to spend the next week or two debugging Symantec software issues.

  • When it comes time to install, do I need to be logged in as Administrator? So far, I have been running my PC only from my standard user account (no administrator privileges).  Neither the initial notice I received, nor the subsequent "Continue" screen said anything at all about having to be logged in as Administrator.  I would find it very, very frustrating to go through half the steps of installation only to be told later on that I should have started all of this from an Adminstrator account.  So the question is this: do I need to be logged in as Administrator or not?  And if I do, in fact, need to be logged in as Administrator, then why on earth is this fact never mentioned at all in any of the documentation?  The initial notice (see below) says, "You are now ready do download and install an updated version of Norton Internet Security..." but is that really true? Or do I have to first log off my standard account and then log back in again as Administrator?   It's not very clear to me.

Thanks, RIchD
