Hello blump314.

Norton Security Scan or NSS if a free standalone antivirus-scanner. You can find more information about it on the link below

[edit: bad link removed, correct link appears below in this thread.]

For how it got installed it could have come with some other freeware that your mother installed.
It can easily be uninstalled from the control panel, closer instructions you find on the link above also.

Cheers

Are you sure that is the right link? It took me to:

Error: "Auto-Protect experienced an unexpected error..." (3035,6)

 Hi.

Sorry, copied the wrong link. Here is the correct one.

thanks to all of you ---

comment : even if NSS comes with some freeware, NSS should discover that NIS is already installed --- too bad (-1 point for symantec, huh!)

While that might seem like a negative point at first, consider this scenario:

A user has an infected system, and decides to install Norton Internet Security 2008 afterward. The product installs, but since some malware will replace key files of the the Norton products with the malware, there may be some corruption. When the Norton Security Scan is run, it will scan even the Norton Internet Security files to ensure the system is malware-free.

This is an important security feature that I think is a +1 point for Symantec, taking into account the worst-case-scenario in making a free scanning tool.

hi

my mom's pc is installed with norton internet security (latest version)

suddenly appeared a new icon (and new program) : norton security scan!

Thanks for the update – I like the sound of a separate utility that checks, after an immediate online update, to see if my system, including other protection, are in fact OK.

i read all of your comments - - -

since NSS seems to come with a freeware, imho there is something wrong in the organization, no?!

and what? mom's NIS can be infected, huh!
