White Screen on Logon

Please Help,

I am running Vista on a desktop,

about 7 days ago when I booted up the computer I logged on to my username and I was met with a white screen.

I can log on to or switch to other users.

I have tried a restore point which did not work

I have been running Norton virus software continuously for 6 or 7 years

John

HECK. "Which browser(s) do you use that have the problem?" is someone serious??    The user logons to the user account and is met with a White Screen  ummm what has that got to do with the browser(s)??

There are reasons this can happen and 2 major reasons why at the moment (I can and have caused it on my system) and the reason why you can logon to other accounts or switch accounts no problem. as stated in message 1 "I can log on to or switch to other users. "

This is NOT when it is stated "White Screen on Logon, the when I start my browser I get a white screen."

Sorry guys maybe not too clear

This happens at start up: I have 3 logons me , my wife and son.

When I chose my logon I get white screen

When I chose my wife or sons log-on I have no visible problem

All of my email and Utunes accounts are on my log on which i cannot get to through my sons log-on.

If i am not clear please ask questions

John

This only happens on one of three logons so i would doubt it is a graphics card - please prove me wrong

John

See if you can boot into your profile using safe mode.

Second suggestion, when you are at the white screen, try pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC

That should bring up the task manager.

Can you see it?

Is Explorer listed?

(explorer.exe not iexplore)

Go to this forum http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/

And use someone like myself who knows what is going on and trained in tools to deal with this

Thanks Dave

When type control alt delete and select task manager I get nothing - it is running because if I shut down I can see my screen and the task manager shutting down.

I have also tried safe mode - when I select my log on I get a blank screen with "safe mode" in the 4 quadrants it stays for less than 20 seconds then reboots - I tried this twice with the same result

John

Do as I stated above

Hi John

I had the same problem twice the first time I just held the escape key down after entering the password and before the desktop appears and this seemed to stop the white screen, the second time this did work but I spent a few hours logging in and out and pressing different keys and combinations of keys but went back to holding down escape and got the desktop back but it seemed a little unstable.  I run a full Norton scan, run a full windows defender scan and found zero problems then I run c cleaner and then performed a system restore from the programme menu, accessories, system tools and used the latest system restore date which was before the problem occurred re-started to find the white screen back.  Then switched the computer off then switched the computer on and held F8 down to gain access to the operating system and a screen that has

Start in safe mode with command prompt

or

Safe mode with command prompt (use the arrow keys on the key board to move around the screen and then enter to select one of the above)

You may have to type your login password or select administrator

You may have to select operating system

Then the command prompt screen appears with a flashing cursor and type in

rstrui.exe

press enter and wait for the dates screen  to appear you can go back one at a time but I went back about eight dates and this was about thirty-three days.  Select the date press enter and wait this should take you to the password screen and there should be a dialogue box saying system restore successful on the desktop.  I hope this helps.

Then you’ll need to update your Norton security.

DON'T USE SYSTEM RESTORE

have a person deal with this correctly due to what else may have to be dalt with on the system, in the background,  The amount of times users are stuck and / or in a deeper hole after using System Restore, but now the whole system has changed

Use a trained person to do this, that is what we do, and can use other tools to do so.

Hi Quad I have posted on bleeping computer as in instructed

Thank you Intesec, this worked.

I had already tried a restore point from the windows control panel which did not work but from the safe mode command prompt it worked.

do you have any idea what caused this is it a virus or a compatibility issue

Thanks again

John

thanks, that basically solved my problem too

thank god i serached for it before i posted a new topic

No point in giving an answer as there are no logs or data, for people like myself, so there is no answer .

You did not do as I said, and posted, in a completely different area on BC, you have aslo used System Restore which has changed your system in many ways.

I would love some more users like this to use System Restore and find they have bigger problems or they still have the problem, and now completely stuck.  Like users do find out, I have had a few and I leave them stuck as that do not do as asked and so I just leave them.

Just like the users that reformat, and after installing windows find they still have the problem, hehehe. even after being warned.

Bye

Hey Quad,

i did not mean to dis you and I did follow your link to BC and posted   I am not used to using these forums and struggled to find my way around.

I have been asked to run a malware program by someone in BC which I will do and I will post files as he requested.

every one is not an expert and I followed advice from this forum - hopefully the problem is solved. Long term

keep well

john

There is no point as you have completely altered your system,  and done what you were asked not to, but did it anyway.

Like going through a red light.  Not everyone is an "expert" but users like to think they are or know better, can't read or follow instructions.

You did not follow what I said to do, It is that simple, used System Restore againt advice, little wonder hospitals have trouble woth people who also go against instruction. Oh well not everyone is a doctor.

Your posting was also not where I stated to go with the link with the right board. How hard is it to click a link and read what to do or not to do??  Now I can see at times why the world is stuffed in certain areas.

Quads

You are sad Quad you need to get out more. We are not all experts in this area.

I do get out and about,   I do mall security, and also ultra distance running (above marathon distance)

You just need to learn how to read  / follow instructions.  The cat does better at not doing what I tell him not to, and he is no expert.  I have had users that know they just have to read and do as I ask, and yes Female are much better at following and doing as asked, Males tend to be I can do it, I can do it, even when they can't.

Well done Females.

Hi I would suggest you run a malware program I found 7 trojans that norton was not picking up - I got this support from bleepingcomputer.com.
