Why do my Internet Explorer settings not save?

Hi all, I've had a quick search around and can't readily find an answer - but apologies if this has been asked / answered previously.

On a new computer I've recently installed Norton Internet Security 2011 and Utilities 14, running IE8 in Windows XP. I've not tailored any of the settings in Norton or IE from the installed defaults.

Whenever I launch a new IE browser, I have to resave search settings, and none of my usernames / passwords are stored in the relevant websites (even though I confirm the offer to save them each time).

Is this a Norton security feature that can be 'turned down'? I'd like to make my browsing more efficient by not having to reinput or resave information everytime.

Many thanks for any advice.

There are at least 3 ways I know in which names/pwds are stored as a result of a request on certain web pages.

I do not know which method you are referring to. However, have you tried Identity Safe on the Norton toolbar. That should save login and pwd in many cases and has the advantage of being capable of being backed up, restored, and interrogated. It is therefore transportable from one PC to another.

Hi Chicksandslnc,

This sounds like cookies are not being saved.  In IE, check in Internet Options, General tab, if "Delete browsing history on exit" is checked.  If so either uncheck it or click "Delete..." and uncheck the box for "Cookies."  If the sites are listed in your Favorites, you could instead check the "Preserve Favorites website data" to retain cookies for those sites.

Hello ChicksandsInc.

There might also be a problem with the smart screen filter interfering. If you have that feature turned on, please try turning it off and see if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Thanks for all your responses and suggestions.

Unfortunately these don't solve it - Smart Screen Filtering is turned off, options in browsing history are set to not delete cookies, but still IE returns to a default setting everytime I boot up.

I'm sure it must be the new Norton Utilities or Internet Security I installed, it never did it before - I just can't find an obvious setting to toggle that'll keep all my browser settings (without degrading security obviously!).

Hi Chicksandslnc,

It wouldn't have anything to do with NIS, but Norton Utilities could possibly be doing too thorough of a job.  See this KB article on configuring disk cleanup:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20090112120726EN&ln=en_US

Hi Chicksandslnc,

Also check NIS in Computer Settings and if desired you can set Tracking Cookies Scan to Ignore or Ask Me. The default is remove which means that during a quick or full scan cookies can be removed.

Best wishes.

Allen

Did you Check "Preserve Favorites website data"

I use Utilities 14 as well as NIS2011, as other posters have pointed out NIS has nothing to do with your issue.

I found by tinkering around with Utilities 14, I had to un-tick the Index.dat file cleaning to get Utilities 14 to save my cookies reliably.

As others have said, be sure to have the cookies you want saved are checked in the utilities 14 browser settings window.

I do not know enough about program files to explain it, but I assume the index files have something to do with the cookies being saved.

I hope this helps -- Bill

Thanks all.

It did indeed prove fairly straightforward after all advice received:

Norton Utilities

Optimize

Clean Your Disks

Browsers

Select cookies to keep...

Seems to have solved the problem, many thanks to all for the assistance, I'm very grateful.

You're welcome.  Glad to hear everything is working correctly now.
