Why does Norton 360 not recognize Norton Power Eraser?

Tried running Norton Power Eraser and Norton 360 did not recognize it as a safe program.  What's up with this???

Hi,

Was this a fresh download of NPE from the Norton site? What's the OS? Which version of 360?

Thanks

OS is Vista

downloaded 360 two days ago new from Norton

Yes this was a new down load of Power Eraser yesterday

Hi,

Sounds like they might have done a bit of tweeking to the program so that 360 didn't recognize it.

No other guesses come to mind

Keep us posted

Hi mox-ct,

I just downloaded the NPE from this link:

https://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx?lcid=1033

The Dowload Insight follows:  as you can see it shows as 5 months old:

I would suggest you retry the download using the ink I provided.

NPE file insight 2.PNG

Just tried that and got:

NPE(1).exe has no available reputation information from Norton 360...

What's going wrong???

Hi mox-ct,

From the main page fo N 360, select Security > then Run Scans from the drop down menu.  Next select Norton Power Eraser and GO - let us know what you get.

Yea, you are the Man!!!  It worked, and no threats found.

Glad you got it sorted, although I am still curious why it acted that way?

Since NPE is now included with v21 there is no reason I can think of that you would need to download it separately.

I think the crux of the problem with online purchases of Norton is there is no instruction, and most people not in the IT business like myself don't understand all the ins and outs of launching the programs.  Another problem I am having is the purchase of PC Clean, with only 30 days to use it, no instructions on how to use it.  That was posted in an existing PC Clean thread with still no reply...

But what do I know???  I sit behind a desktop at work 8 to 12 hours a day and have owned at least 6 pcs in the past 20 years and still can't get all the benefits from my Norton purchases...

Hi, mox-ct. The forums are here to help you with any Norton questions you may have.

I'm curious to know why you wanted to run Power Eraser.

Despite it being included in the Norton program, it is still an advanced last resort tool and not intended to be an on demand scanner, as it can remove critical files if you're not careful.

A couple of reasons, I received a call from MicroSoft Tech Support (from Wizard Technologies) and they told me that they keep getting error messages from a computer owned by me.  I've been noticing my computer slowing down and some inconsistancies while trying to work with some applications on my computer.  I've also noticed that my previous version of Norton (provided by Comcast) stopped providing me updates with respect to any threats detected and assumed it stopped working.  With all these suttle hints, I decided to update Norton and see if I can clean up any problems, hence wanting to use PC Clean (which I still can't use).

Unless of course you cannot open your Norton Product, or you are infected and need to download the NPE to a USB drive for use on another system.  I'm sure there may be more reasons for the separate download.

Please have a look at the following link:

You mentioned your previous version of Norton from Comcast - how was it removed prior to install the retail version of N 360?

The blog was interesting and sounds like what happened to me.  They even had the gall to ask for $199 to clean up my computer.   Hahahahaha not likely.

I did not remove the old version of Norton from Comcast, I thought the download would write over the older version.  See, I'm NOT an IT person.  In other words, 'what do I know'???
