Why does the Red X stay on, and message about You have turned off your antivirus, still come up?

I read a forum message from 11/2011, about this SAME PROBLEM. Even after having a couple of new Internet Security versions, since then, AND having an Uninstall/Reinstall or two, since then... This problem STILL HAPPENS.

Whether it is an Auto Liveupdate, or a Manual Liveupdate, when the Virus Definitions are updated, Norton sometimes gets Stuck, thinking it is Still disabled; even though it is NOT.

Using a suggestion, from an earlier post, Actually Disabling and Re-enabling Does get the Red X off, but, it Should NOT happen; especially on an Auto Update.

It doesn't happen alot, but, enough to make me wonder, WHY it STILL happens! It is apparently NOT Just Me.

My Time and Date are fine. AutoFix finds NO problems. I have the Latest version. I have Uninstalled and Reinstalled previous versions, AND this version. This has been occuring over a couple of Years. NOT all the time.

I have Xp Sp3, with LATEST updates.

When I did a MANUAL Liveupdate today, and it was doing a Definition Update, Before the update was finished Installing, I got the message, that my Anti-Virus was Turned OFF.  I then got the Red X. LiveUpdate said the Updates were Completed Successfully. The System Icon showed that Disable was available for Smart Firewall and Auto-Protect. When I clicked to Disable Auto-Protect, it asked For How Long. I chose the Default of 5mins. I then had the option to Enable Auto-Protect. I chose it. Red X goes away. The Red X, and left-over window with Turned Off, is usually there, in the morning. In other words, and Auto LiveUpdate was done.

So, there is some type of Sensor fault, where Internet Security temporaily stops Auto-Protect, so the new Definitions can be active, BUT.... The sensor does NOT see that Internet Security has RE-started Auto-Protect.  Left hand does NOT see what the right hand has done.

I often do Manual LiveUpdates, during the day, without waiting for the Autos. I can sometimes get 3 or 4 updates coming in that way. I guess that I am asking for an update, in the middle of the scheduled Update Time (1 hour?? 2??)

If this is happening in the morning when you first  start your PC, it could be a date/time issue.  Check the date and time when you first boot your computer.  You may have a failing CMOS battery that is causing the system time to stop when you shutdown the PC.  After the PC has been running for awhile, it is probably automatically updating the date and time online, so when you check later, everything appears to be correct again.

Hmm... Went to Internet Time. Clicked on Update. Had an error going to Time.Windows.com..Changed to Time.Nist.gov. The Update then worked.. I was 2mins off....

The Red X was NOT happening when my pc was Off, then turned on. In most cases, it was after an Auto LiveUpdate that was done, at Night, while the pc was still on, but idle.  Or, in the case of the morning, when I did a Manual Update, that had a Virus Definition file update.

Hi markfr:

Good catch.  If you view your Windows Services (search for "Services" from the Start menu), does the Windows Time Service have a status of Started?  You might also be able to find errors logged in the Windows Event Viewer related to the Windows Time Service if your connection to time.windows.com was being blocked.
