Windows 7 shuts down unexpectedly during backup

My PC has crashed several times in the middle of the backup process.

I am using 64-bit Windows 7 on my desktop and a Seagate 1TB external hard drive for the backup.

My Norton product is 360 Premier Edition v.4.3.0.5.

The error is new, it started to occur a month or two ago, but now I cannot run the backup. The PC always restarts in the middle of the process.

I tried to delete previous backup and to start the complete backup from the beginning - this did not help either.

I really want this important feature to work normally. Any solutions?

Is the machine giving any error codes?  It sounds like it could be an overheating problem.  Does this happen during full system scans as well?

Hi -

Yes, the same thing happens during the complete scan.

I haven't tracked the error code.

Will try the scan once more and come back here later.

To check the temperature, you can download Speedfan and install.  It is a small utility that will check component temps and drive health.  You will need to run as administrator in Win 7.

I installed the utility.

During the scan one sensor (Temp3) occasionally showed very high temperature of about 70C.

Finally the PC crashed again before the scan was finished.

Under normal conditions Temp3 usually stays at 35-40C, during the idle time - at 30C.

Your guess seems to be right.

What can be done in this case?

Attached is the Windows error report generated after the system restarts.

It is hard to judge what temp 3 is attached to.  It could be a couple of different things.  What has been identified in Speedfan?  There should be hard drive, and CPU, possibly graphics processor, etc depending on the manufacturer.

Probably the machine has a dust problem which usually involves an air can or two to clean out the fins in the CPU fan.  If that doesn't help, it may need to visit the repair shop for a reapplication of thermal paste.
