Windows 8 Action Centre Message

I have just bought a new PC with Windows 8 and Norton Internet Security pre-installed.

When I open NIS it shows a large green rectangle with the word "Secure" but if I open Windows Action centre it says "Window Defender and Norton Internet Security are both turned off."

Which message should I believe?

Welcome,
Have you activated the trial copy of NIS? It is a full version but with a shortened expiration date. Also, have you run live update until the program tells you that all of the updates have been downloaded and installed? Last, but not least, have you rebooted?

Keep us posted

Graham

This disagreement between Windows and Norton is a known situation (although I've not run into it on my Windows 8 / NIS machine) that is being worked on by Microsoft and Norton -- it is not restricted to Norton BTW and we have heard reports of it for other security products.

We are told that you can be reassured that as long as the Norton flags say you are protected then you are .....

Keep an eye open here since I'm sure it will be announced when Microsoft fix the problem ... and if you have any other problems you know where to find us.

I can vouch for that. I have a different security suite installed on one of my computers and it suffers from the same problem.

Thanks for the confirmation ....

Thanks for confirming that all is OK.

Graham.

I've been having this issue too. I tried many solutions as described in the Norton 360 thread:

- disable/wait/enable - didn't work

- re-register wmiutils.dll - didn't work

- stop winmgmt service / delete repository - didn't work

- uninstall/reinstall NIS 2013 - didn't work...

In the end I tried this and it finally resolved it for me: sfc /scannow

Apparently some system files didn't have proper security/access levels, according to the CBS log file.

Thank you! The System File Scan worked for me as well...CBS log listed a number of corrupt files and files with incorrect permissions, and corrected them. Action Centre Win8 now reports that Norton is running!
