Problem: I run live update on my windows 8 laptop and the files download. The update finishes and indictes the update failed. Only 1 of 3 files installed according to the log.
I am using NIS version 21.1.0.18
I have uninstalled all Norton Products via Programs and Features. I ran Norton uninstall tool, download from Norton.
I downloaded the latest version, ran all updates and live update worked for about 3 days then started failing again.
Repeated above, with the exact same results. Very frustrating to say the least. Oh forgot, also purchaed a new 1 year subscription before all this started.
I click get support thru NIS on the failure screen and nothing happens, so here I am. Anyone got a clue?
Just ran live update again and it failed. This time it view summary > supprort came up and ran the tool. Error codes are 8920, 208
Unable to repair, please reinstall. Same as last 2 times. Oh the version of norton I have on this laptop was preinstalled my MSI, not sure if that makes a difference.
Hi Horrific, are you running Windows 8, or 8.1 ? These codes indicate a problem with the live updates servers, and the possibility you may have a corrupted install. I would try the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool to ensure you have a fresh install of the latest version. Then try running Live Updates, until no more are found. The link is below. I hope that helps.
Thanks for the quick response, I am running 8.0 x64, and have used the removal tool 2 times already. Reinstalled twice. Pulse updates work fine, manual live update downloads work fine Install of Web Definitions and Web Definitions Hub fail, all failures in the log indicate the exact same two failures.
The recommended procedure if you uninstall via Programs and Features is to then run the Norton Removal Tool, to clear out any possible remaining program remnants, and then download and install a fresh version. Is that the way you did it, or did you use the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool, which are different tools ?
The first time I believe I did the programs and features removel and the norton removal tool. The second time I did the Nrnr through the program. Both reinstalls worked for about 3 days then started failing again. I just downloaded the tool you linked to and run it. Internet speeds drop to less than 1 Mbps around here at night, so will probably be much later untill I can report.
Also check your computer clock times, as if there's a problem there, Live Updates may not work properly. Remember to run Live Updates manually after the reinstall, until no more are found. Good luck !
Just ran thetool that I downloaded, Unrecoverable error. It just dawned on me, this version of NIS was supplied as part of a suite, I wonder if that matters. The clock is correct :)
quick question, I just downloaded the removal tool due to the error encountered with Nrnr. Can I install NIS 2012 under windows 8.0?
2012 is compatible with Windows 8. If you think you had a security suite installed, you might be better served by doing a complete uninstall, and use the Norton Removal Tool, and if you have a version of 2012, then you can do a clean install of that.
Also if you have a local Id Safe, dont forget to export a copy in CSV format, as DAT isn't backwards compatible.
Well, reinstalled after downloading the version I renewed a few days ago. After running all the updates, rebooting the machine and runnuning live update, FAIL. Error 8920, 208.
giving up for tonight....... I will uninstall and remove again tomorrow. However I will install a previous version. If it works can The renewal be moved to the previous vesion?
Yes, it can. If you run into a problem, you can always contact Symantec Support. They are very helpful, sorting out problems with renewals and codes for reverting to earlier versions.
