Windows Automatic Update - At Risk

I contacted Technical Support before I contacted the Norton Community and they re-started the Norton Products - but could not Resolve my Issue.

I only have 09 Days left on my Trailware.  I am thinking of Buying a Subscription when I Upgrade my Security Software in September 2008, so what do you suggest I do regarding un-installing/re-installing Products?

Tony,

Why do you never Reply to my Messages without me having to Post another Post asking if you could Reply as soon as you can?

I’m sorry. I tried reading this thread, but I’m afraid I got lost somewhere. I saw a number of mitigating solutions. Could you succinctly reiterate for me what the current outstanding issue is that you are experiencing? Thanks!

Dave_Coleman,

There has been No Change to my Issue.

Could someone answer my question(s) in Post 21 of 25.

Hey  Floating_Red,

I agree with Tony, without being able to sit at your computer, there is no real clear answer I can give you. If this were my computer, I would probably do exactly what Tony recommends: Uninstall all Symantec software via the NRT (then restarting the computer, of course). And here’s where I’d poke around the OS to enable Windows Automatic Update again. (Restart.) Then I’d install NSW (without NAV) and then install NIS (with all of the appropriate restarts).

It’s situations like these where Norton Save & Restore or Norton Ghost might come in handy, to revert your PC back to a time where it functioned as you desired.

Sorry I have no additional wisdom to offer.

Hi Dave_Coleman,

Windows Automatic Update is On via the Control Panel, like has been mentioned in this Post.

Norton SystemWorks Trailware Ends in 03 Days' time; do you suggest I un-install Norton Products via N.R.T. when it ends and then re-install N.I.S.?  However, W.A.U. is currently On and I usually Download Updates from the Windows' Update Web Site before Windows Automatically Downloads the Updates because I monitor the Security Response Web Page, so would I really need to do this when everything seems to be working fine within N.I.S.?

Regarding Norton Save & Restore 2.0: How would I get my data back via C.D.s if, say, a Virus wiped all of my data off my P.C. so it was just like when I bought it - or worse?

Regarding Windows Automatic Update:
If you aren’t happy with the way some features are working now, I say follow Tony’s recommendations on how to fix them. But if you can live with it as is, then leave good enough alone.

Regarding Norton Save & Restore (NSR):
If your computer experienced catastrophic failure and you had to start from scratch, you would use the NSR Recovery Disk to restore your computer with the Full Disk Image you previously created and backed-up to an external media (DVD/External HD/etc.). You can also use NSR to backup only select files/folders. – Of course all of these backups should be done prior to the catastrophic failure. :smileywink:

Regarding W.A.U.: What "recommendations" are you referring to?  It is annoying that Norton Displays a Red X and informs me that I am At Risk which is false wihich means N.I.S. is falsely reporting I am "At Risk" which I would like to Fix but, since everything seems to be working fine, I will be okay to just leave it until N.I.S. 2009 is Released because it is only a few months' time until symantec Releases N.I.S. 2009.

Regarding N.S.&R.: How do I back-up Selected Files, e.t.c., on to a C.D./D.V.D. disc?  And how do I Recover certain Files/Folders, e.t.c.?

Could someone answer my concerns.

I apologize for the delay.

To quote Dave:

1) Uninstall all Symantec software via the NRT (then restarting the computer, of course).

2) And here's where I'd poke around the OS to enable Windows Automatic Update again. (Restart.)

3) Then I'd install NSW (without NAV)...

4) and then install NIS (with all of the appropriate restarts)

Have you already done this? I see that you replied rather quickly to Dave's post with this information, which leads me to believe that you have not. Please be sure to review the post to which you are responding, as there may be critical information in the post that may resolve your issues.

Regarding N.S.&R.: How do I back-up Selected Files, e.t.c., on to a C.D./D.V.D. disc?  And how do I Recover certain Files/Folders, e.t.c.?

Below is a link to download the User Guide for Norton Save & Restore 2.0.  Chapter 4 covers how to backup your data, while Chapter 8 covers image and file recovery:

http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/products/nsr/nsr_2/manuals.html

Your questions regarding Norton Save and Restore are somewhat vague, and I'm sure that after you read the User Guide and apply those instructions to the product, it should be quite clear how to "...recover certain files/folders, etc..." as well as "...back-up Selected Files...". Thank you for your patience.

I do not really want to go down that Road using N.R.T. because there is nothing major wrong with my Norton Product and everything seems to be working as it should be; plus the fact I would have to re-Install all my Norton Products which seems rather silly just to Fix a stupid, annoying and minor Issue.  I was hoping to get this Fixed without un-installing N.I.S., but I know that this will not be the case.

Thank you to Tony and Dave for their help regarding this Issue.

Just used the Norton Removal Tool and Windows Automatic Update is still At Risk; I would like to know how to Resolve this Issue.

Without any Norton Software installed, the Windows Automatic Update is still At Risk? If so, do you have any other security software installed? This may be affecting the status of Windows Automatic Update. Also, is the setting for Automatic Updates still set to "Automatic", the recommended setting? If so, and if you have no security software installed, there may be some error with Windows itself.

Or did you follow all the steps listed, including installing the Norton products in the order listed with the settings listed? If so, another piece of security software or Windows Firewall being enabled could be conflicting with the status. Any additional information you can provide is appreciated. Thanks!

I mean it still shows up on Norton Protection Center W.A.U. is At Risk; W.A.U. is on Automatic, the Recommended setting, via the Control Panel.  I have no other Security Software installed.  Is this an error within Norton or Windows?  And I meant W.A.U. was At Risk on the N.P.C. when I re-installed Norton.

The only symantec Product I am using at the moment is N.I.S. 2008.

This Issue is starting to get on my nerves and I am not going to have this error with N.I.S. 2009/2010/2011, e.t.c.!

Thank you for getting back to me, Tony.

Could someone get back to me on this Issue.

Has anyone noticed that in the very beginning of this thread that it was NSW Basic 2008 that was used which does not include NAV 2008!!!

IIRC Somewhere he has said that he installed both and indeed asked for solutions to installing both at the same time .....

Good catch for this thread though!

I did Click on the Download for N.SWB.E. and it does have Auto-Protect which I did find odd as there was no mention of it.

And what do you mean, huwyngr, by: "Good catch for this threat though!"?

Could we get back to the Issue which is W.A.U. is "At Risk" which is starting to get on my nerves now since I have tried all I can think of!

<< And what do you mean, huwyngr, by: "Good catch for this threat though!"? >>

I did not say that! I said "this THREAD" .... The relevance being what jarcuri wrote about NAV 2008.
