Windows Defender running after installing Norton

After installing Norton Windows Defender is still running.  In the past other virus software has disabled Defender.  Does Norton merely use Microsoft's virus software as it's own? I have noticed also that Norton just manages Windows firewall settings.  It seems like Norton is just a management tool for Micrsoft rather than a stand alone virus and firewall program.  Is this right or do I need to manually turn off Window's software to let Norton do it's thing?

Hello richard1283

Welcome to the Norton Users Discussion Forum

Which Norton product do you have installed now including the version number? What security program did you have installed previously and how was it removed?

Norton Security Suite V. 3.5.2.11  I had McAfee but did a clean install of the operating system prior to installing Norton.

Hello richard1283

Please try running live update until you have no more updates. The latest version should be 3.8.0.41. Once you have all the updates, please reboot your computer.

OK, have the latest version but nothing has changed.  Defender is still running things.  Is that the way it should be.  I would think Norton would be running the scans.

What Windows and Service Pack (if any) do you use?

ps: If nothing helps (LiveUpdate, etc.), you can disable Defender manually this way:

1. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

2. On the services list find Windows Defender, double click on it

3. By the start options set it to be Disabled.

Now it won't load by start up.

Hello richard1283

Norton does not use Windows Defender to run the show. Norton does it's own thing.
