ok I did what you said but it did not work. My computer has two users, the administrator user works, and that is where I am running every type of security scan, norton and malwarebytes etc.. all coming up clean or fixed. The other user which I allow others to use email and web browsing is where the pop up boxes keep coming up "Windows Explorer has stopped working" windows is checking for a solution to the problem" then another pop up says " Windows Explorer is restarting" this goes round and round and refreshes the screen every time. I was able to get on the internet in between these pop ups and disable all my add ons. I have followed everything in windows support but I am doing it through the administrator side, which I am not sure if it is affecting the side that is acting up. I got my Icons back when I restarted.
Windows Explorer (the file-system manager) is not the same thing as Internet Explorer (the browser). It sounds like you are doing browser troubleshooting, which will not help. See the following article for some things you might try:
I agree that it is was a Windows problem not internet problem. I did everything you said and guess what? It stopped! Yeah. I have yet to try anything else but at least I am able to navigate in that user window. Thank you very very much. Although I may be back.
Things are working a little better, but something is still not right. Because I am a nervous wreck I am trying to backup everything onto a CD. So Far all documents and downloads worked but when I get to my pictures and open the picture file up I got that message again that "windows explorer has stopped working" windows explorer is restarting" and I don't have enough time to copy the pictures to the disc before it closes down on me. Also I have videos from a flipshare camera that I want to backup but the flipshare program won't even open up anymore. Hope you can help.

Explorer has a preview function which tries to make a thumbnail of your videos. It's has been known to repeatedly crash Explorer (on XP anyway) if there's something unusual about the video file. You can disable this function by unregistering some DLLs or something. Since I don't remember exactly, I'll let someone else explain how to do it or else maybe a Microsoft forum is better.

This is what I was thinking, too. I encountered that problem once on either XP or Vista, I can't remember which it was now. If this is what is crashing Windows Explorer then setting the Icon view instead of Thumbnail view should allow you to backup your files without crashing. Removing the offending file will also allow you to return to Thumbnail view. That's assuming this is actually the root cause of the crash. Give it a try.
