Is it necessary to have the Windows firewall and the Norton firewall up? Do they fight with each other or is anything compromized without the Windows one? Can I just rely on the Norton firewall?
Thank you
Brian

What about the firewall which defaults to "on" on my Linksys router. Should I leave this on along with the Norton 360 firewall?
Mine is on, thats external firewall, extra protection and doesnt interfere w/ software on pc :)
Thank you. I will shut down the windows one.
Can there be any software or hardware damage with two or more firewalls? Or just very slow?
Brian
We recently had a discussion on the COMCAST Forums re: runing two software firewalls. This is what I found out:
Just for grins, I checked my Windows 7 system (with NIS 2010) installed and it says:
These setting are being managed by vendor application Norton Firewall Provider.
The warning is in yellow with an Exclamation point in front of it.
Then I had to check my XP Home SP3 system and it says:
At least one of the firewalls installed on this computer is currently ON.
Windows firewall actually shows as Green (on). |
My understanding is that Norton controls the Windows firewall in order to avoid any conflict.

Running two firewalls at the same time will NOT cause damage to your system, but you may notice a slowdown. If you notice, Norton 2010 does not disable Windows Firewall by default, so I don't think it's really a problem. You can leave it on, or turn it off, as you wish. My windows firewall is turned on - no problems at all. Running two antivirus programs on your system is something different, and this may cause troubles...
artfreak is right. The Windows Security Center clearly states that two or more firewalls can cause conflicts:
Norton Internet Security automatically configures rules for all the programs that require internet access. Windows firewall will ask the user, whether to allow acces or not, for a specific program, but NIS/N360 won't. Leaving Windows Firewall tuned on, along with Norton should not cause conflicts.
That is exactly what the XP Windows Security Center says, but not in Win 7!

And in Vista...(the screenshot is from a Vista computer).
Win7 has a different Security / Firewall structure and APIs. The Firewall in Win7 will show a status of on but a certified (Win7 compatible certified Security program) third party program will have total control over it; usually opening everything and letting the third party program handle the filtering / firewalling.

OK, I'll take your word for it, I don't have my Vista Laptop running at the moment!

Exactly as I responded ina previous post in this thread:
