AGAIN... A NORTON BUG ... the RED X

The red X and Windows flags come up several minutes after booting.

Open Action Center

  • - Action Center shows that everything is turned off.
  • - Click on any of the buttons, get asked if I want to run the program, answer Yes ..., nothing happens.

Norton 360 Premier is GREEN ... says I am protected.

Possible fixes for this problem found in these forums:

  • - Run a "fix" tool
    • Running the fix tool, NortonMountPointRepair.exe does nothing, actually says "This tool was unable to fix the problem.  You will need to uninstall and reinstall."

  • - Norton's Remove and Reinstall
    • Running the Remove and Reinstall tool is ridiculous and time consuming and overkill.  It is equivalent to reloading the operating system.  Norton does not provide a re-boot equivalent.  There is no way to stop and restart Norton

  • - Run services.msc, look for Security Center, make sure it is running
    • Running services.msc, shows that the Security Center has been started.

  • - Right-click Help, Get Support
    • Right-clicking Help, Get Support results in Norton saying that Norton did not find any issues.

  • - Run Liveupdate once or twice or multiple times
    • Running :Liveupdate has nothing to do with "fixing" anything.  Maybe it breaks Norton, definitely doesn't fix anything.

A solution that CLEARS the flagged PC issues

  • right-click the Norton icon, disable, then restart the Smart Firewall.
    •   This clears the Network firewall flag.
  • right-click the Norton icon, disable, then restart Auto-protect.
    • This clears the the other 2 flags although sometimes this takes two attempts since both Auto-Protect and SONAR Protection need fixing and only the first of these gets "fixed" the first time.

It seems that the ISSUE is that Norton and Windows are NOT COMMUNICATING.  This problem started within the past couple of weeks.  I am running on Version 22.5.4.24 on Windows 7.

QUESTIONS:
As long as Norton is all "green," can I just ignore these Windows messages?  Is everything really "secure?"
