Hi, I am looking at renewing my subscription for PCs . Most of them are at windows 7 and I have one at Windows XP and one at Windows vista - laptop. I have been using norton for several years. The renewal option has antivirus plus or norton 360
Is windows 7 and windows vista still supported? I believe that XP is no longer supported.
Yes, Norton still offers Norton v22.15.5.40 [the legacy version for Win XP SP3, Vista SP2 and Win 7 S0 (i.e. Windows 7 with no service packs)] that is described in the 24-Sep-2020 release notes Norton 22.15 for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP0 is Now Available!. I just sent a private message to a user who uses a legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 product on their Vista SP2 machine and they confirmed that they are still receiving regular virus (SDS) definition updates and other protection updates.
Just note that these legacy Norton products are considered to be in "maintenance mode" and are unlikely to receive future product updates that add newer features (e.g., Norton Software Updater, Norton Secure VPN, etc.) or an updated virus scan engine, so I suspect that Norton v22.15.5.40 will be the final product version released for these legacy Norton products. See NortonLifeLock employee Gayathri_R's 14-Jun-2018 announcement Norton Maintenance Mode for Windows XP and Windows Vista for more information about the ongoing protection updates (e.g., virus definitions, Intrusion Protection definitions, etc.) for these legacy products . I assume that NortonLifeLock will eventually discontinue support for the legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 products as the number of Win XP and Vista users continues to decline but as far as I know they have not decided on an official end-of-life date yet.
I used the legacy Norton Security Deluxe v22.15.x on my Vista SP2 machine until I purchased a new Win 10 laptop in 2019. If you purchase a Norton 360 product key to renew Norton on your Win 7 SP1 and higher machines and have spare activation seats (e.g., if you purchase a 1-year / 5-device subscription and only activate Norton 360 v22.23.x on two of those newer devices) then you can used your spare activation seats to activate the legacy Norton v22.15.5.40 on your Win XP SP3 and Vista SP2 machines at no additional cost. Also note that most Win XP and Vista users still using these legacy Norton v22.15.4.50 products post their questions in the Norton Security | Norton Internet Security | Norton AntiVirus board.
Renewing your annual subscription directly from Norton can be very expensive. I used to wait for a good sale and purchase a spare product key from an authorized reseller like BestBuy, Staples, etc. and keep the product key on hand until my annual subscription was about to expire - see my 26-Jun-2022 post in ffwfire's I am wondering if I get the Norton updater? for more information. As I noted in that post, I thought Norton Security v22.15.x - especially the bundled two-way firewall - was a good choice for Win XP and Vista computers, but I don't like some of the business practices Norton has adopted in recent years since parent company Symantec was sold to Broadcomm in Nov 2019 and NortonLifeLock became a separate company. For example, NortonLifeLock now forces users to enter a credit card number and will automatically enable auto-renewal in your Norton Account if you activate your annual subscription with a product key purchased from an authorized reseller like BestBuy. However, you can log in to your Norton Account at https://my.norton.com/account/subscriptions after you have registered your product key with Norton and then delete your billing information and disable auto-renewal once your subscription has been activated.
Also note that I'm not a fan of the current Norton 360 v22.23.4 product line for Win 7 SP1 and higher (it's bloated with unnecessary features and constantly nags you with pop-up ads trying to scare you into buying additional Norton services) so I currently use the built-in Microsoft Defender antivirus on my Win 10 laptop and supplement my real-time protection with the latest Malwarebytes Premium for Windows v4.5.x.
