Hi everyone......
I have WIndows XP home service pack 2 and I am considering installing service pack 3. I have not done so yet because I have read of people having many issues after installing WIndows XP SP3 ( especially with NIS ).
Should I download and install the SP3 via WIndows automatic update or should I get the physical disk from Microsoft, disable NIS 2009 ( firewall and antivirus) and the install with the disk. Will installing by using the disk cause less problems or issues versus the automatic update method?
Also, can I expect to have issues/problems with NIS 2009 with the SP3 installed?
thanks
Joe
I have several XP machines, all at SP3 and running NIS2009. NOne have problems that are attributable to SP3.
As long as you know the source of your SP3, it does not matter which way you do it. I would suggest doing it from Windows updates.
Whyuse 2009 when you can have 2010?
Hello bulajap
I would suggest getting sp 3 because support for sp2 is going to be ending very soon. As this site will say, the best way of getting sp 3 is from Windows update.

Please remember also to get the other windows updates for sp 3. Any issues that may have been with installing sp 3 was probably back when it first came out. It's been out for a while now.
Here are instructions for installing sp 3

Good luck and please report back how you made out. Thanks.
thank you......
do you recommend disabling NIS 2009 ( firewall and antivirus) during the upgrade to SP3?
Hello bulajap
If you look at that 2nd link I posted, there is a section there that says Before You Begin.. Click on that and it will give you instructions on how to proceed and how to prep for it.
Yes, It is recommended to disable antivirus software, but I have a better idea:
1. Read the instructions from the link given by floplot
2. Download a standalone installer for XP SP3
3. Download the latest version of Norton Internet Seecurity - 2010 (17.5.0.127)
3. Disable your Internet Connection
4. Uninstall NIS 2009 (use add remove/programs or use the Norton Removal Tool) and reboot.
5. Close all programs currently loaded in the Windows system tray (if any).
6. Install Windows XP SP3, reboot.
7. Enable your internet connection, install Norton Internet Security 2010, use your NIS 2009 key to activate.
Hello
Thank you Vejdin for clarifying that.
One thing to add, after you install NIS again, please don't forget to get the rest of the windows updates for SP 3.
Has the problem with the NIS icon in the taskbar disappearing been corrected?

Yes, please see this post.
P.S. Note that this issue is unrelated to your original query and has to do with NIS 2010 and nothing to do with which OS you are using.
