Winzip - how to stop notifications

I purchased Winzip 22 and within Settings, checked the box to stop notifications. However, I am still getting pop-up windows on my desktop (even when Winzip is not open) to update to the newest version (now 24). I've emailed their Tech support twice but have not received any response, even though they "promise" to respond within 1-2 business days.

Does anybody know of any tricks/hacks that will stop this? I'm almost ready to uninstall this even though I paid for it and moving to some free software.

Thank you!

Hi nolanchrist007:

My personal opinion is that you should not use the Softonic download site.  It has a reputation for bundling browser hijackers, adware and other PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) with "legitimate" software installers.  Malwarebytes, one of the best free anti-malware scanners that is often recommended in this forum for scanning for threats that might have been missed by Norton's real-time protection, will detect the Softonic Downloader as PUP.Optional.Softonic.

Whenever possible, you should always download software from the original manufacturer's site (e.g., for WinZip, go to https://www.winzip.com/).  If that isn't possible then I would suggest using MajorGeeks - it's currently the top-rated download site in Gizmo's Freeware review article Best Freeware Download Sites.

I have used this service from softonic. But I wanted to know that is softonic safe to use or not?

This have bugged me in the past but as bjm_ suggested, you can stop the notifications. Use it for the peace of your mind.

Winzip was not listed under Windows 10 notifications. However, I did block Winzip using Norton's firewall as described above and tested by going into Winzip and pressing the "Check for update now." I did get the pop-up shown above ("Winzip could not obtain update information...."). Hopefully, that solves the problem. Thank you!

Hi Pearson100:

If you have a Windows 10 computer, you might also want to check the notification settings for your operating system as described in the MS support article Change Notification Settings in Windows 10 and the How-To Geek article How to Disable Notifications on Windows 10.  If WinZip is listed as a monitored program in your Windows settings you can turn those notifications off at Settings | System | Notifications & Actions.

FWIW ~ I'd update to version 24 and then....I'd try >

and then I'd try > "Block" WinZip Internet access.

and then I'd test "Check for updates now"

YMMV
