I have had my laptop for almost 4 years. Not one time have I had this type of problem.
Two days ago, everything was fine, and I could connect to the internet via my broadcom wireless card which is built in the laptop. After Norton updated itself, everything is absolutely gone. Nothing even shows up in the device manager. I have tried to add new hardware, and the computer doesn't find anything. I have scanned for new hardwared in device manager and nothing. Even the wireless switch on the laptop doesn't change color from orange (off) to blue (on). It is always on blue.
I talked with tech support through chat, and the only thing they tried was to uninstall 2009, but my card still didn't show up, so I was told that it wasn't Norton's fault. Again, for 4 years my wi fi card has worked flawlessly.
I have searched through as many of the threads as I could handle looking for an answer. If there was somewhere deep in the thousands of threads, I apologize.
I think so. Everything was fine up until around 10:30 last night...that's when I gave Norton the go ahead to update to 2009. Keep in mind that I downloaded the update with my wireless card.
Norton updated, said to restart the computer. I did so, and right then, my card disappeared.
I then tried the switch, nothing happened.
I tried to start HP wireless assistance, and it wouldn't run.
I went to BIOS and enabled the network to boot up.
I uninstalled all network cards in Device Manager
yelled a little
Then the card showed up in the Device Manager, but with an ! stating that there were no resources for it. I refreshed the tree, tried HP wireless assistance again, it worked, and finally the card got resource, and worked.
Until today
Norton again decided it needed to restart the computer, so with some hesitation, I pressed ok. When the computer came back up...my card is gone again.
I have tried doing all the magical things I did last night, but it's still not working.
I have tried to replicate everything, but to no avail.
The funny thing is, I just shut down the computer last night, and this morning when I turned it on....there it was. Working like usual. I don't get it.
I'm hoping it won't happen again, but I guess if it does, it needs a time out, or a nap or something.
Researching this issue online, I am finding that HP has acknowledged a problem in some of its laptops and has even done a warranty enhancement to address what may be your issue. On the surface, it would appear that the Norton update aspect is probably coincidental. Please refer to the following links for information and then I would suggest contacting HP for a resolution. Hope this helps.
