Wrong information found by Norton

Anybody else have this problem?

I checked the Norton "Dark Web" Monitoring System. Besides me, there are three other reports and all three are for my oldest son. Now, Norton knows my date of birth and I hope they know basic math, but I'm beginning to wonder.

My son and I have the same name. I'm a Jr. he's III. I'm 74. He isn't. But there in the Dark Web report is information on him. His wife's name. Children's names. Address.

Not once, but three times.

Anybody else have that experience?

While I'm here, my personal and financial data was taken in a breach of AT&T in 2021. This past Friday, they struck. Hit me up for over $500 in my checking account and tried to get $5,000 from my credit card. So, my question is: If there was a security breach at AT&T, was Norton unaware of it? If they were aware of it, what steps did they take to protect their customers? The answer to both is: I don't think they knew, which means they did nothing to stop the dark web users from taking my and others info and using it.

Thanks for listening.

just my 2 cents here

being that your son and you have same name ( minus jr. and 111 part)  it may be a common result if you try to look up either of you online

they dont always add or include the jr. sr. or other in listings

as for the at&t breach they at&t would contact you if you were in that breach ( i.e. change password etc.. or provide you with credit monitoring for example depending on situation)

norton doesnt actively scan each and every companys network or systems as part of the programs they sell

i.e. they dont monitor my bank or any company i do business with because i have there 360 or other program

i am not aware of any setting for that to happen on nortons part

Not sure how Norton protect you if the breach is  at at&t or another company. Norton only protect your PC('s).

If you are sure the breach is at the end of at&t they should take action to block your account and change cards etc...

But out of experience, if company is breached they tend to hide it or notify costumers very late, in my case 28days... alot of damage you can have in that time.

When you set up  the Dark Web monitoring, did you enter any information from your family members? The detections are not always accurate, as you have seen. But better to send you information that 'Might' be about you than to err on missing your information.

Norton' Dark Web monitoring cannot stop the bad guys from trying to use any of your information that has been compromised and posted on the dark web. All they can do is notify you so you can take preventative measures like changing passwords, or in the case of bank cards, getting new cards and cancelling the old. You would need a credit monitoring service to help protect against the attacks you were subject to.

How were you notified about the AT&T breach? However it was, that was the time you should have taken action to protect your information.
