I've tried to change the firewall configurations to allow for traffic, but haven't opened specific ports. How do I get the extender to work with Norton 360?
"the current confguration of the Windows firewall is preventing a successful connection to the Media Center Extender"
Windows firewall is off right now.
Hi stburkett,
Please see the following Symantec KB article on configuring Norton 360 for Xbox:
Configuring Norton 360 for Xbox
I did followed the instructions to allow for full trust...allow it was never identified as an XBOX 360. I don't think it could be any other device though. I also manually changed program rules to allow for all traffic from
Media Center Ehshell.exe
MCRD Device Service Mcrdsvc.exe
Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Svchost.exe
Media Center Extender Tuning Wizard Mcxnettw.exe
MCRMgr Mcrmgr.exe
Media Center Extensibility Host Ehexthost.exe
I have another media center extender that used to work fine...but we did change routers recently to a Linksys E2000. The Xbox is a wired connection, the other extender is a wireless connection. I am running Norton 360 v. 4.0 and Media center 2005 rollup2. I don't have service pack 3 installed, would that make a difference? (I heard there were problems with media center 2005 and service Pack 3 so I didnt want to mess with my settings on an old computer). I keep getting a firewall error and Windows firewall is turned OFF. I can't even turn it back on...
Hi stburkett,
The Xbox 360 might not be named as such in the Network Security Map - it may show as an unidentified device. I would suggest using the Firewall Reset feature in Norton 360 to revert the firewall settings to their defaults. It is possible that your user-created rules have inadvertently caused a problem with your connectivity. Assuming there is no issue with the new router, if you follow the suggested steps the Xbox should work.
I did a Norton reset of the firewall. In Media Center Extender Manager, I keep getting the same error "the correct ports cannot be opened. The current settings of Windows Firewall is preventing a successful connection to the Media Center extender." This same error happens whether I try to connect the new XBox (wired) or the old extender (wireless). The only thing that has changed is a new router. The wireless Media center extender used to work beautifully.
I then connected the xbox directly to the computer bypassing the router (turning both the computer and Xbox off and on)... and got an error message about a DHCP problem.
I reconnected and disabled the Norton 360 firewall and tried to run the Media Center Extender Manager and still got the same "ports cannot be opened" error. So if I COMPLETELY disable the firewall why would I keep gettting this error? I know you will send me to MIcrosoft, but they will blame it on Norton.
I can get the Xbox to play some music from my computer so it is sharing some content. The problem seems to be with the Media Center program and firewall settings and Norton.
I've tried everything on this thread except the post by bruss 813. and I did not set any rules up to open specific ports for incoming and outgoing traffic....just program rules. And then I reset those to the defaults too...

What operating system are you using?
Windows 5.1 service pack 2
Media center 2005 rollup 2
I'm having trouble turning on windows firewall since Norton 360 disabled it. HInts on that? the error message is "windows cannot start the Windows firewall/ICS service."
This is the only thing I didn't try. Should I manually open these ports?

To use a firewall created by a company other than Microsoft (third party)
If you use a third-party firewall, you might have to manually configure the firewall to give specific programs access to the ports that they need. The firewall manufacturer might prompt you to configure the firewall by using one of the following methods:
- Configure the firewall to give only specific programs access to certain ports.
- Modify the specific ports that the program uses.
To configure a firewall, you must know:
- The name of the program.
- The ports that the program needs to use.
- The direction of the communication signal.
Use the following information to configure third-party firewalls:
Application | Protocol/port | Direction | Network |
svchost.exe | UDP 1900 | Inbound | Local Subnet |
svchost.exe | UDP 1900 | Inbound | Local Subnet |
svchost.exe | TCP 2177 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
svchost.exe | UDP 2177 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
system | TCP 10244 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
ehshell.exe | TCP 554 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
ehshell.exe | UDP 5004, 5005 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
ehshell.exe | TCP 8554-8558 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |
ehshell.exe | UDP 5004, 5013 | Outbound, Inbound | Local Subnet |

mcrmgr.exe | Random | Outbound, Inbound | Internet |
mcx2prov.exe | Random | Outbound, Inbound | Internet |
Windows disables the Windows Firewall as long as a third-party firewall is installed, so I don't think that would be the issue. I'm starting to wonder if the router may be the problem. I found this, but I don't know how useful it might be:
http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=082ee344b4754044b1ff95fcd78b5305_4576.xml&pid=96&slnid=4
Xbox live works great, so I am connecting to the internet just fine. I just don't think I need to set it up special behind a router.
I did try to hook up Xbox directly (bypassing the router--and wired), but that was giving me other problems that I didn't want to tackle. The Xbox couldn't even recognize the PC.
I can also access some media folders as well to play my music library, but just not through media center. I love the media center interface...and I have another extender that i HAVE to set up through that interface.(although wirelessly, not hard-wired) It used to work GREAT! (before this new router and Norton 360--I'm not sure which happened first.)
I did read this: The correct ports cannot be opened. This issue occurs when you have turned off Windows Firewall on the computer. During Windows Media Center Extender Setup, Windows Firewall has to be updated to allow communication between the Windows Media Center–based computer and the Xbox 360 console. If the Windows Firewall service has been stopped, these updates cannot occur. Therefore, the Windows Media Center Extender Setup program won't install. http://support.xbox.com/en-us/pages/xbox-360/troubleshoot/media-center-faq.aspx
OK, I've checked some past threads and come up with two options, either of which might work. I'm crossing my fingers:
Configure Norton 360 for Xbox Media Center Extender ...sounds promising!
Or this suggestion by PapauZ:

Uninstall Norton 360 from your computer, you can use Norton Removal Tool:
http://www.symantec.com/nrt
Check whether you are able to use Xbox 360 after removing Norton program. This will help us to find out if the problem is really caused by Norton 360 or not. Then, you can upgrade to latest version- Norton 360 5.0. You can use the Upgrade Center for installing the latest version of Norton 360. After installing the Norton program, run LiveUpdate repeatedly untill you see the message "No more updates" and then restart the computer. Let us know the results.
