Thanks for the link. I downloaded it for my Mom's XP PC just in case.
Note that the link is to the SP3 installer and not to XP with SP3 installed .....
It's not that difficult to slipstream the SP into a copy of the XP disk from what I remember of doing the SP2 one a long time ago and there are advantages in having an installation disk with the SP3 already installed .....
As usual Thurrott has the instructions
http://winsupersite.com/windows-xp/slipstreaming-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3
I used:
ISO Buster. This useful data recovery tool can be downloaded for free.
ImgBurn. This is an excellent free utility for disc burning.
Other downloads. You may want to be prepared with some other installation files, perhaps on a USB key or burned CD. These files might include drivers particular to your hardware (especially a network driver so you can get online) and the application updates mentioned in Step 6 below.
and I added a file needed during XP installation -- would it have been the SATA driver so you don't have to interrupt the installation and add it manually.
BTW I use ImgBurn regularly and the current version does more than burn ISO images to a disk ..... Very user friendly
WARNING
I recently downloaded ImgBurn and my system became infested with PUPs.
I can NOT recommend ImgBurn to anyone for this reason.
And my own experience;

I take it you are referring to OpenCandy?
Sorry about that -- it was not like that when I first used it (and when Thurrott wrote his article) since adding a PUP only started with 2.5 and went to OpenCandy with the current version.
It will be interesting to see what my MBM scan says -- it's running now -- since I've had ImgBurn since XP SP2 came out! But it has been updated to the current version.
ImgBun still seems to run without those PUPs so I'll keep using it but watch out for updates.
At least the EULA which they give you the opportunity to read and accept/reject does list it but it's both or nothing.
Anyway there are plenty of other ways of burning images to disk!
Hi,
You can use the native Windows 7 Image Burner, I use it for my XP ISO files too.
(select also the option to verify files).

Except if you are dealing with XP which is the topic ! <s>
But there are other free utilities without PUPs I'm sure.
Hi,
I posted this for users who have both W7 or W8 & XP systems, like me.
If you are having only XP then you need a third party tool, I also have an old version of ImgBurn and there are no PUP's.
Good to know that there are some PUP's in newer versions of ImgBurn.
Regards,,
You mean users like me who have XP, 7 and 8 multibooted.
Anyone any thoughts on "dangers" after running the Malwarebytes procedure for removing the OpenCandy PUPs from an updated installation? I'll make sure I don't have automatic update on for IMGBurn -- I like the interface.

I wasn't given any more instructions than to have MBAM remove the detections.

For what it's worth.
Interesting that the OP there got two PUPs as I did but not the same.
See my image above.
That OP is me!
You looked different .....
Hi Krusty13 / huwyngr:
I've never used ImgBurn, but OpenCandy was detected on my machine few months ago during a MBAM QuickScan. MBAM was able to remove all traces of OpenCandy off my machine (as far as I know), but there's a link to a removal tool on the OpenCandy FAQ page if you're interested. Here's the excerpt from my MBAM log:
Files Detected: 1
C:\Users\Lori\AppData\Local\temp\is-U0PHM.tmp\OCSetupHlp.dll (PUP.Optional.OpenCandy) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
I traced the origin of OpenCandy back to a BatteryCare installer that came bundled with a toolbar for Amazon.com. I declined the toolbar but the OpenCandy recommendation engine (OCSetupHlp.dll) was still downloaded to my computer during the BatteryCare installation.
While I was researching OpenCandy I found a Microsoft support article here noting that OpenCandy will use rundll32.exe to launch OCSetupHlp.dll, open an outgoing TCP connection to remote servers and send "non-personal" information about your operating system, geographic location, etc. without the users' consent - information third parties like Amazon presumably use to target your browser for re-directs, adware, etc.. This support article also mentions the LatestDLMgr.exe download manager that MBAM detected on Krusty13's machine.
I checked my NIS history and noticed an upswing in the number of rundll32.exe excursions through my firewall that began shortly after the BatteryCare installer was launched on my PC (note that rundll32.exe is a trusted Windows host process and is Allowed by default at Settings | Network | Smart Firewall | Program Rules | Configure). I couldn't confirm that OpenCandy actually managed to open a connection and send information about my system back to the OpenCandy servers but I was pleased to see that MBAM was able to detect and remove this PUP without harming my system.

Many thanks Imacri for a very useful post.
I had run MBAM's scan and let it quarantine and delete the two bits if identified. I downloaded and saved the cleanup tool and after checking it with MBAM <g> and having it show up clean I ran to cleanup tool.
So I shold be OK <g>
And ImgBurn is still installed and running after that MBAM scan ......
