I am running Norton Internet Security 2008.
I wasn't sure how to run the scan in safe mode on Vista, since the Symantic 'XPantivirus Removal' webpage only gives you info on 'How to start your computer in safe mode' for Windows XP/2000/Me/98.
BTW, what is Malweare Bytes Anti Malware, and how will it help ?
Hi,
Usually when you get the "unsupported file" message it is because the detected files are inside a compressed file, most often a self-extracting .EXE.
Check the details on the files that the scan has found and see if it states that it is a file located inside another file. If this is the case, note the path to the file and manually delete it. XPantivirus tend to have some self-extracting files in the %temp% folder.

I think that is exactly what is happening. In the Log Viewer, I see :
Affected Areas: [sav.exe] inside of [c:\users\username\appdata\local\temp\c.exe]
However, when I try to navigate to this file to remove it, there is no 'appdata' directory. Any ideas how I can get to this file and delete it ?
Seems the files are in a hidden folder. I have found the files and deleted. I will now re-scan. This should fix the problem now.
Many Thanks !
On top of your explorer window, click Organize, then the Folder and Search options, go to the View tab, check the Show hidden files and folders option.
You should then see the appdata folder.
Hi,
Clicking on the Start button, typing %temp% in the search field (Run option if you have XP or XP-Gui) and pressing enter should bring you to that folder since it is the systems temporary folder.

Thankyou everyone for your help ! I deleted the suspect files, and re-scanned, and all is ok now.
Hi,
Norton internet Security advised that I have 8 threats related to the 'XPantivirus' that require attention. All the treats are the same :
Risk : Medium
Title : XPantivirus cannot be removed from an unsupported file
Status : Remove Failed
Action : Review*
When I take the action of 'Review*', it directs me to website http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/cgi-bin/virauto.cgi?vid=4294907196, and my Norton internet Security says 'All detected security risks have been resolved'. In the 'Detailed Results' screen, all 8 threats have a message saying "APantivirus cannot be removed from an unsupported file". Then, when I re-run SCAN ALL, the 8 threats re-appear.
I checked the suggested 'Removal' tips on the website, and I cannot find any of the registry entries that are suggested to be removed. I am running Vista.
Can anyone suggest how I remove the XPantivirus from my computer ?
Thanks !
What version of Norton are you using? Have you tried running a scan in Safe Mode? Don't use IE to surf cause this iws how you get this virus. Use Firefox to surf the internet. Try downloading Malweare Bytes Anti Malware and run a scan in safe mode.
