Tony,

No I dont have an issue in logging in like that but please understand that Yahoo IM 8.1, while successfully logging in with either "No Proxies" or "Firewall with No Proxies" still cannot send or share files while NIS 2008 is installed. So we still have an issue with a GA product like Yahoo IM 8.1. I have tried tech support but their stance is that once all Symantec services are shutdown NIS is no longer in play. I have proven that this is not the case but they dont want to listen.

Can you help?

Steve

In the previous thread, you mention that NIS 2008 is setup to allow Yahoo IM, but that seemed to be with Yahoo IM 9.x version. Is the same true for this system? How are you checking this? Which parts of NIS are you confirming this in?

Tony,

Here is a screenshot of the NIS 2008 settings for Yahoo IM 8.1 as it stands on my laptop right now:

Thanks,

Steve

I apologize for the delay. You may want to follow the steps outlined here, and let me know if this resolves the issue. Thanks!

I followed these steps with no affect.  Yahoo will still not connect.

Hi terrygg,

It would appear that we have duplicate threads - here's a reprint of my response to that other thread:

Hello terrygg,

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're experiencing with YIM and appreciate your careful detailing of the problem. There is a protocol in the following KB document to follow:

http://solutions.symantec.com/sdccommon/asp/symcu_defcontent_view.asp?ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=3b2f05ae-776a-4086-af22-417cc22a3ca6&docid=20070913064624EN

If that doesn't do it, try the utility in this document and let us knowhow it goes:

Tony,

From my perspective here is what I am running into:

1) I cannot successfully run Yahoo IM 9 with NIS 2008 installed. I have configured NIS to "Allow" Yahoo IM through the firewall, and have configured Yahoo IM configured to "Firewall with No Proxies". This configuration does not yield a successful login at all.

2) When I re-configure Yahoo IM to "No Proxies" I am able to login successfully but I cannot share or send files to another chat user at all. The images in photo share come up grey and if I try sending a file it never goes through.

3) I then shutdown all the NIS services and re-started my computer to test whether NIS is the issue or not. Your online tech support folks told me that once all the NIS services are stopped, and the computer is restarted, it cannot be NIS that is causing the Yahoo issue. I tested Yahoo IM again and was able to login with "No Proxies" but again not able to share files or send files.

4) I completely removed NIS from my computer and restarted. I then started Yahoo with "No Proxies" and was able to successfully send files and share files with another chat user. This proved that Yahoo is not the issue and that NIS, even with all Symantec services stopped still was interfering in some way.

5) I then configured Yahoo IM with "Firewall with No Proxies" and was again able to send files and share files with another chat user.

So with all the testing I have done I can say that there is an incompatibility with NIS 2008 and Yahoo IM 9. I have been forced to go back to Yahoo IM 8.1, but that still has the same issue sharing or sending files. It can login successfully in "Firewall with No Proxies" or "No Proxies" configuration.

I hope this wasnt too long of an email.

Thanks,
Steve

[Edit: These posts have been moved to get better exposure to the issue, and because they differ from the original post in the previous thread, and the title has been updated]

Thanks, Steve. I know our R&D Teams read these posts to be aware of issues with released Beta software (Like Yahoo! Instant Messenger 9.x). I know this will be extensively tested for the next version of Norton Internet Security.

As for the proxy configuration, do you have any concerns over logging into the client with "Firewall with No Proxies"?
