Yearly issue | Norton Utilities 16 Core product file(s) have been modified

How can I stop the box coming up tell me ?

I cannot use some of my performance tools. I can't wait. I'm going to have to go and buy something else. Wow, Norton is worse than TomTom at fixing a problem? Seems so!

Yes Nigel, the error can be ignored.  Just click it away and NU16 will run right away if it is on a schedule or if start it up manually just click it away and run what you wanted to.

Cross fingers for a fix.

It is taking unusually long for a fix.

I seem to have exactly the same problem as quite a few have posted about error on Norton Utilities - ....

Core product file(s) have been modified. Please run Smart update or reinstall the product.

Can the error be ignored until there is a fix in place?

This has been reported in another thread, and a Norton Employee has posted there.   https://community.norton.com/en/forums/yearly-issue-norton-utilities-16-core-product-files-have-been-modified

Norton has to release an update to fix this. Reinstalling does nothing.

Hi .. Norton utilities 16 Version 16.0.3.53  Engine 5.0.0.5 ..Core products have been modfied. Reinstall of norton util. 16  does not help.

Thanks

Hi Norton-thanks for the update; “message and the product should work as normal since there is no update required for Norton Utilities”, However not true. One caveat is if you have a scheduled event, you will come home later to see that the scheduled event cannot initiate and bypass that error. In other words, you cannot schedule a cleaning unless Utilities is already running.  Just an FYI-Thanks-

Neither do mine!!!

As the title of this thread noted, this has been an annual issue for the last few years. Norton has to send out an update to clear this message.

No amount of fiddling with settings or reinstalling will do anything to fix this. We just have to hope Norton gets on this after the holidays.

Thanks Krusty13 for the sentiments.  Yes this has been frustrating throughout the life of this wonderful Utility.

I have used Norton Utilities fro when Peter Norton owned it through the Dos days and into Windows 1.0

Yes the shedding of a large part of Symantic is worrying as well as the push to Norton 360.  It was a disgusting program to Beta Test and the release way back when was the same and the program was taken off.  Who's bright idea was it to resurrect a failed consumer release ?  I Know I will not be using it, as it is pushed at me through notifications.

Back to NU16 : Again all posters if you are here before going to support; Please do not waste your time by reinstalling as Reinstalling will not fix anything. (experienced as this is 3rd or 4th time).

Do keep posting your frustration though ! ! !

I guess this is what happens when a mega corporation sheds jobs like Symantec / Norton LifeLock have done.

Customer Support have told some customers (according to some posts in this thread) they were working on a fix.  Hopefully they are and you guys won't have to put up with this for long.

HI, there is no place in your Account to update.  It means update the program from the program, which you did.

I suggest keep it up, come to this page and when the pop-says did this solve your issue to hit No,

I dislike very much as you have mentioned that customer service is non-existent for this issue.  As well no notification that this was not suppose to be for Windows 10, which it works fine with by the way.  With the use of Windows 10 Dos/Powershell in Run as Admin the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth   Works just fine to fix and can set ignores for the few issues that are ever present. For others that do not know the commands please see https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image

Also no notification of end of life of NU16.  As well NU16 is not even listed in my account.  Nothing has come through NIS notifications since it is usually the thing that breaks NU16 which they know.  As well am sure know every program on you cpu.

So yes gross negligence of what is going on, or not going on.

Tony Weis would have fixed this issue with the testers.  Is missed.

Let's get a update here Symantic Staff.

Same issure, "core product fiels have been modified, please run smart update or reinstall product.

I can't even find where to update with in my account. But as I have read, it wouldn't matter if I did find it and reinstalled.  As far as hitting smart update, with in seconds it says I am up to date, this has been going on for almost a month now and I am positive it is not updating.  I an running Windows 10.  Honestly Norton guru's is there even a fix or are we just running around in circles here.  Would like to hear the real answer, At least I can stop this erroneous pop up error and just uninstall Norton utilities and be done with this.  What is the real truth...……...looks like this has been an issue for quite some time.  So I'm thinking no fix but no one wants to admit to this,  seems to me this last resort is more frustrating to your customers.

From a Norton Support chat session 12-29-19 19:30

JC22312:  I have already smart updated and reinstalled. This does not fix anything.

Vikas:  Thank you for following the steps and sorry for the trouble.

Vikas:  I am so sorry to inform you that the error "Core product(s) have been modified. Please run Smart update or reinstall the product" is a known issue and we are working on it.

Vikas:  You can ignore this message and Norton Utilities will work as normal.

JC22312: No it does not work as normal. Schedule does not work and manual actions do not end with normal results.

Vikas:   JC22312 , I am so sorry for the trouble, however, we are aware of the issue and we are working on it to fix the issue.

JC22312: Why don't you say on Norton support you are aware of issue and working on it instead of having clients reinstall and run smart update. This is dishonest when Norton says everything is working normal ignore the message.

Vikas:  JC22312 again sorry for the trouble.

Vikas:  I can understand your situation.

Vikas:  However, we are already working on it.

The message that Norton Utilities is working normally is total BS.

I first had this notice occur 2 weeks ago. Support logged into my computer, did the updates to verify I was updated. Also reinstalled the program.  Still the popup occured.  They assured me to not worry about it, all was OK.  They were sending it to the proper persons to esculate the fix.  I was to give them 48 hours and an automatic update was sure to come out and fix the problem.  That has been 2 weeks plus now.  It is still happening and effects the way I have things set to automatically run during my "down time".

Norton has always responded promptly to issues that I have had and their promises have always came true for me, but in year 2019 I have seen many lapse and let down on their promises to me, including this one...  I admit I now have second thoughts about what my security and maint programs will be for the year 2020.   I have been Norton for many years but the responses of Norton to my concerns in 2019 have been very lacking.   Norton - I know I am not the only on feeling this way....  Are you taking notice ???

Actually, all my performance tools don't work.

Well, mine really doesn't work. Registry Cleaner gave me 245 irreparable files. And the cleaning lasts  about 30 seconds. I was ASSURED by Norton that this will be taken care of with the "fix."

Don't know if I'll hold my breath.

I have the same problem.  I uninstalled Norton Utilities, ran Smart Update, but this does not fix the problem.  I still get the error message, Core Product Modified, and have to click on OK for the product to proceed.  I run this product at night so it sits until the morning when I then have to click the OK button for it to proceed.  Please fix this!!!!

All New Posters please read, there is no solution until a update, if/when it comes. Do not reinstall as you will not fix anything by doing so.  Please do post that you have the issue and are waiting for a patch to fix it.

There is no need to reinstall NU16 as it will run the same again with the error if you do unless Symantec fixes it with a update.

If you are running other Norton products update manually as fix may come through that as well as the Update on NU16 if and when it does come.

Just click away the error and the program will run properly.

Am not at all happy with Sunil_GA  post as it is the same as what I just told you.  No timeline, no saying they are working on it, or something useful like that.
