Add-on companies are selling the browsing history of millions of users to third-parties according to a report that aired on German national TV.
Reporters of Panorama managed to gain access to a large data collection that contained the browsing history of roughly 3 million German Internet users.
The data was collected by companies that produce browser extensions for various popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.
Panorama did mention only one add-on, Web of Trust or WoT, but did not fail to mention that the data was collected by multiple browser extensions.
It looks like WoT is back up on Mozilla's AMO at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wot-safe-browsing-tool/. All previous versions except the current beta release candidate v20170125 have been removed from AMO. Release notes state "Enhanced user privacy and improved security".
WoT remains disabled in my FF browser. I'm still experiencing high CPU consumption and performance issues I mentioned <here> when the Norton Security Toolbar is enabled in my Firefox browser so I might reconsider once Mozilla gives WoT v20170125 final approval.

I see that Mozilla went one step further today. They not only pulled the WoT extension from their online store, but as of 24-Jan-2017 WoT has been added to their official list of blocked add-ons and will be automatically disabled and no longer usable if this extension was installed by the user. The block announcement is posted at https://blocked.cdn.mozilla.net/i1523.html.

Never trusted WOT anyways
Slowing things down seems to be a Bitdefender specialty, at least on MY desktop !
I tried Traffic light in FF and the search icons never showed n the first page of search results but it did block the AMTSO phishing test page. I stopped using it though because at times I could not access the FF menu by clicking the hamburger button. It also slowed my browsing down noticeably.
Hi, Imacri. I tried Bitdefender Traffic Light, and it seemingly never blocked anything ! Others have said the same.
Hi lmacri,
I wonder if the damage has already been done.
Hi Krusty13:
Thanks for the links - both very interesting reads. I noticed the following in MyWOT's latest statement you provided the link for at https://www.mywot.com/en/forum/70818-to-the-wot-community:
"For the user browsing data used to enable WOT’s website reputation service, we intend to provide users the ability to opt-out from having such data saved in our database or shared. This opt-out will be available from the settings menu, as we want to provide each user with a clear choice at all times....We will spend the coming weeks making the changes to WOT which will ensure we are back on the right track. You, our community of users are the real power behind WOT and we will continue serving you as such."

There is another wilders' thread here with links that could be of interest - https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/your-browsing-history-may-have-been-sold-already.389647/
Here's a link to the WoT team's latest statement.

I should have mentioned that I was looking for an extension that could substitute for Norton Safe Web's display of site-rating icons next to each search result.
Yes, I understood. Just sharing, search annotations by historical reputation, by user report are not worth my real-estate advertising Norton or data back to BitDefender. Privacy Policy claim data is anonymized as you know. Not a fan of toolbars, not a fan of Norton toolbar. Firefox built-in protection is too quiet. I'll browse sandbox'd. Web filters are for fun vs protection.
bjm_:lmacri: Has anyone tried BitDefender's TrafficLight extension for browser protection?Yes....ran TL for awhile. Nice Icon, nice presentation in navigation area and search results, no toolbar. Quiet, nary a page block... Wilders has active thread re WOT <here>, maybe get some ideas .
Hi bjm_:
Thanks for the feedback about BitDefender's TrafficLight - I might give it a go. I'll check out the thread in the Wilders Security Forum as well.
I should have mentioned that I was looking for an extension that could substitute for Norton Safe Web's display of site-rating icons next to each search result. My Firefox browser already has decent built-in Phishing and Malware Protection, but whenever I enable the Norton Security Toolbar in my Firefox browser to activate the site-rating icons the CPU consumption by firefox.exe jumps and my browser slows to a crawl - see my image in the thread Issues After 21-Sep-2016 Product Update.
I disabled WOT v20151208 today and re-enabled my current Norton Security Toolbar v2016.8.0.95 and the cooling fan on my 32-bit Vista SP2 machine runs continuously because of the high CPU consumption by firefox.exe, so it looks like the Norton Security Toolbar still isn't a viable alternative to WOT for me.

Yes....ran TL for awhile. Nice Icon, nice presentation in navigation area and search results, no toolbar. Quiet, nary a page block.
I'm not needing/wanting search annotations so, for fun. I run FoxWebSecurity with Norton ConnectSafe IP's. Nice Icon in address bar. Simple page block. Usually in-line with SafeWeb. No search annotations.
I run Adguard AdBlocker browser extension, offers malware/phishing protection. Quiet, nary a page block. Nice Icon, nice presentation. No search annotations.
My VPN browser extension (sometime run) supposedly filters malware/tracking. No search annotations.

> ads-blocker + scripts-control cover a lot of mal as you know.
Has anyone tried BitDefender's TrafficLight extension for browser protection?
According to the ghacks.net article Mozilla and Google remove WOT extension from Store that PatsSoxBruins linked to <here>, both Mozilla and Google have now pulled WOT from their online stores because of fears that WOT is selling data collected by their extension (e.g., IP address, geographic location, type of device, operating system and browser, date and time, browsing usage including visited web pages, clickstream date or web address accessed, browser identifier and user ID).
I'd be interested if anyone can recommend an alternative to WOT (other than the Norton Security Toolbar) until parent company MyWOT clarifies what they're doing with this "non-personal" information in their privacy policy.
