2 Large Back-To-Back Virus Definition X64 Updates This Morning

Strangely, I noticed that there were 2 Large Back-To-Back Virus Definition X64 Updates This Morning, one completed manually at 7:56 AM for 136.96 MB, and the second completed automaticlly at 11:31 AM, for 137.22MB.

Why were there these 2 Large Back-To-Back Virus Definition X64 Updates This Morning, both appearing to be the full definition set?  Does this mean that my NAV is somehow corrupted, and the only way Virus Definition X64 Updates will happen going forward will be the full definition set @ 130+ MB/set?

It sounds as though your definition set got corrupted. Then the product downloaded a replacement set. This too may have gotten messed up.

If it happens again, you may want to check your hard drive for errors.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

I had the same thing, a week or two ago. I44mb download and since then, they've all been the normal size of a few mbs each time.

It happened again, so I ran check disk, and no errors were found.

In addition, I'm  also seeing a number of "Norton Error Reporting "Submissions" in the Security History.   These are new, and have not been happening prior to today.

Please advise on what might be causing this continuous corruption of the virus definition set, which is resulting in  full virus definition set downloads of 130MB every time the  Virus Definition X64 Updates occur.

Windows 7 64 Bit Sp1

Hi, Dubble_D, I'm running the same version as you, so I'd suggest you may have a problem with your Norton product.

You might want to try using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will install a fresh version of your product. Run Live Updates until no more are found, and hopefully this will fix your problem. The link is here...

Follow the prompts, and it should all take a very short while.

Virus Definition X64 Updates appear  to be back to normal once again, without doing a NAV reinstallation.

Very strange that I experienced 3 consecutive/back-to-back 130MB+ Full File Virus Definition X64 Updates.  I've never had that happen in the 25+ years I've been a Norton customer!

Glad to here things are working well again.

The internet is not perfect, and there can always be some interference between your computer and the Update Servers that can cause corruptions.

Problem reappeared again today, along with 2 error condition reports generated 44 minutes after the 139 MB  Full File Virus Definition X64 Update was eventually completed.

I'm beginning to think there may be a problem here, considering this is now the 4th Full File Virus Definition X64 Update in just 6 days.

This does sound like more than the updates getting corrupted.

Go back to F4E's suggestion here, and try the reinstall of your product.

It ,happened again this morning.  Something is causing NAV to identify the Virus Definition X64 File as repeatedly needing a full set download/update.

I will  Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool and see what happens.

The same thing has happened today on another computer (my home PC ) and with an earlier version of NAV (20.4.0.40).  The earlier documented issues were with my dads home PC at another city location.

This confirms for me that there is a server issue here, since 2 different computers with 2 different versions NAV are having these problems.

Please advise on what might be causing this continuous corruption of the virus definition set, which is resulting in full virus definition set downloads of 130+MB when Virus Definition X64 Updates occur.

Hi Dubble_D, it IS possible that the second computer also received a corrupted definition download. If it happens again, you could try our previous advice to use the Norton Remove and ReInstall Tool. There are issues from time to time, and it may just be coincidence.

Hi Dubble_D,

Can you please confirm that Norton is giving you the file size in megabytes (MB) and not kilobytes (KB)?  I just checked two PCs and one had a 139.61KB virus defs download and the other was 145.26KB.

These are 130+MB.

Dubble_D, it sounds very much like a problem with corrupted definitions. You may have to go the Remove and Reinstall route,  then running Live Updates, until no more are found.

I've been away on vacation and am trying to catch up on everything - my first impression was to check the system clock for correct time, day and time zone. Especially since Daylight Savings Time changed back a few days prior (Nov 3) to the first post (unless you are in Europe, then it changed Oct 27).

Of course the fact that it occurred on a second system may make that suggestion erroneous.

Continuing to have problems with a 144.8 MB  full  Virus Definition X64  set downloads on the 2nd (my home) computer today.

Specifically, slow download server speeds  have resulted in repeated failures of the 144.8 MB Virus Definition X64 file to fully download , following the failure of a 1.34 MB Virus Definition X64 file to install after it was downloaded.

This is getting very annoying, as I have encountered this problem now on 2 separate computers.

I've recently had a similar sized update as well.

Have you used the Intelligent Updater lately?

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/definitions.jsp

FWIW, I just attempted to upgrade my 2013 NAV Version 20.4.0.40 to the latest version 2014 Version 21.1.0.18, and the download stalled at 30%, so I cancelled the upgrade for now.

This would seem to confirm that the Symantec serves are not functioning properly at the current time, as neither the new versions of NAV can be downloaded, nor can the NAV 140MB+ Full File Virus Definition X64 Updates be downloaded .

FYI, I am having no other current issues with my internet connection...my speeds are normal, so blame for this problem cannot be placed with my ISP.

Servers finally appear to be back to normal, as the 144+ MB Live Update download completed in about 5 minutes.  A total of 5 updates were installed via a manual update, including a 140+ Full File Virus Definition X64 Update.
