"Additional Apps and Services" banner

So I haven't used Norton in a while and have switched back to see what has changed and hopefully improved. Want to switch away again almost immediately.

The main issue, maybe I am stupid?, but there is a banner that literally covers up the "Parental Controls" on the launch view and I can literally find absolutely no way to remove it. The banner is for "Additional Apps and Services" and it constantly just advertises "Antitrack". If I expand the banner it does have a "close" option, but that just puts it back down to its minimal state covering Parental Controls.

Has Norton really gone so far in advertising that it blocks you from using its own program features? There is nothing in settings that relates to it I can find at all.

Hi @bjm_,
Thank you for your post. We are working on the scroll bar issue. Once fixed, I will update this thread. Thanks.

@Gayathri_R ...is the scrollbar issue fixed?

tedion:
As you can see here the scroll bar goes behind the banner on mine when at its lowest and Parental Controls is barely clearing the banner.

So tried a few things. Completely turning crypto off, restarting, signing out etc. And yes, the option to hide crypto remains greyed out. Once you opt in there seems to be no way to hide it.

NCrypt.exe is only active while Crypto is on. This does appropriately stop running if crypto is turned off.

In general the UI design of My Norton is consistently terrible. I have tried to focus this thread only on the issues of the scroll bar and banners. But once you start digging the number of misaligned boxes, the sign in experience that is a mess, banners that don't behave appropriately, lack of options, the huge amount of real estate that is uselessly used. It is literally amateur hour. I really do think Norton need to go back to the drawing board with this UI, because it is frankly a huge mess and they should really be embarrassed about it. And this is from the apparent leader in security products?

Classic thankfully has none of the UI issues. But they have also started to neuter its functionality as they are obviously pushing over to My Norton. You really shouldn't do that until your new product is better than your old!

Cheers, yes I do have a reasonable desktop with a discrete GPU and opted in to take a look. Haven't yet decided really whether I would use it or not but I would have assumed if turned off you could hide it, but it is all greyed out and unclickable.

Will try signing out and in again as you suggest later on and see how that goes.

Hmm, so with 22.22.1.58 on board.  Since, you had opted in before 22.22.1.58 patch.
1) My Norton - Crypto banner remains.  On - banner goes green & Off banner goes gray.
2) NCrypt.exe remains.
3) Additional settings offering to hide crypto in My Norton is grayed out.
4) Norton Crypto options in Systray.

I'm trying to imagine before 22.22.1.58 vs after 22.22.1.58.

tedion:
I cannot hide the Crypto to see if that at least shows me something hidden, for some reason the option to hide it is greyed out for me no matter if Crypto is turned on or off.

Maybe, once you Crypto opt-in.  My Norton - Crypto banner cannot be hidden.    So, even with a Norton refresh install and you were able to hide My Norton - Crypto banner.  Once you opt in.  My Norton - Crypto banner cannot be hidden.

And once you Crypto opt-in.  The vertical scrollbar goes behind the Additional Apps and Services banner.  You cannot see if any item is below Parental Controls.

Seems like based on your experience.  22.22.1.58 patch returns poorly function scrollbar.
And Norton Crypto -> opt-in is one time - one way.  Once you opt-in.  There is no easy opt-out.

I was imagining a fuller functional opt-in | opt-out experience.  Why does Norton Crypto banner need to be prominent on My Norton right panel?  All that real estate on My Norton left panel.  Why can't Norton Crypto banner be placed with the Run Smart Scan button/graphic.  I don't need prominent Run Smart Scan button/graphic.

Once you're Norton Crypto opted-in.  There is no easy Norton Crypto opt-out.  Once you commit.  You're committed.  You're stuck with My Norton - Norton Crypto banner.  You're stuck with Norton Crypto options in Systray.  Even if I was a miner.  Norton Crypto banner feels too prominent.
My Norton UI has always felt too prominent, for me.   Just saying.
Cheers

Curious, you've tried to hide the banner like explained in the Announcement?  Just curious, my machine is entry level.  I guess if your box has viable GPU.  Then Norton adds Norton Crypto options in Systray...like explained in the Announcement.

  • Added Norton Crypto options in Systray
  • Additional settings offering to hide crypto in My Norton

  • Customers who opt-in to using Norton Crypto will have the feature installed on their systems

Hmm, wonder if you start over (refresh Norton install) and hide the banner before opt-in to using Norton Crypto...would help.  Maybe, once you opt-in.  The banner cannot be hidden.
Hmm, wonder if you try Sign Out -> Restart (not Shut down) machine -> Sign In...would help.

Lets ask @xjoex to chime in.  I think xjoex has viable GPU.

Thanks bjm_

I despise that sales advert disguised as a programme button. That's the one thing that will turn most people off buying Norton again. It should be included with Norton 360 at no extra cost, as most of its work is simply linking to Windows own programmes.

Sorry, I couldn't see the attach image button as an image, rather than a download. Thanks for the help.

I don't have Norton Crypto...fwiw ~ my My Norton 22.22.1.58 ~ W10 + not Sign'd In + scrollbar full up

+ scrollbar full down

tedion:

Just confirming with you bjm_ do you know whether the "Privacy Monitor" that is below "Parental Controls" in your first posted screenshot is standard? It is not appearing on mine. I do note however that my new scrollbar does disappear behind the pesky "Additional Apps and Services" banner. It doesn't seem to be enough to drag far enough down behind the banner to reveal a new app, but I can't be sure.

Can confirm that we now have scrolling, also that the pesky banner still has no option for removal! Small wins.

Part of the original issue was that the bounding box for the App display should end above the banner, which it clearly does in your own screenshot bjm_. When they implemented Norton Crypto, they don't seem to have bothered resizing any of bounding boxes, just shoved them all down the interface causing the bottom of the bounding box to go behind the banner. With the "fix" of the latest patch they just added a scrollbar to the bounding box, but didn't address any of the additional problems with the bounding box and its positioning at all.

Norton Security 22.22.1.58 for Windows is now available!

  • Bug fixes:
    • Scroll bar missing in Features Tile area ( Thread1Thread2
    • The screen shows 100% utilization with 10.2 hash rate – (Thread
    • Norton Security History shows Task Manager is blocked in Windows 11 – (Thread)
  • Other minor bug fixes, under-the-hood changes, and performance enhancements

Add odd thing I have noted since my original posts. When not logged in (see screenshot) a scrollbar does appear. As soon as the account login occurs though and Parental Controls and Dark Web Monitoring are put in the menu the scrollbar vanishes.

Yes I do have a smart scan button exactly as the picture shows.

Note: My Norton [here] does not have Run Smart Scan button nor vertical scroll bar.

  • Norton Crypto is supported on Windows 7 SP1 and later, Windows 8 and Windows 10

Um, Windows 11?

Windows 11 has been added to Notification [here] Edited: 17-Jan-2022
