After update to V24 Windows Update gets blocked/hangs

Issue abstract: After Norton 360 automatically updated to the new V24, Windows Update starting hanging and Windows task host window would block from shutting down, due to said update process hanging. Only upon deinstalling Norton 360 completely, the Windows Update process works again as it should.

Product & version number: Norton 360.

OS details: Windows 11, 24H2

What is the error message you are seeing? Just hangs the Windows update process.

@ReaG The 24H2 update has been having issues with installs since it was released. And you are saying that removal of Norton allowed 24H2 to install correctly? Just clarifying.

Here are some things that may be related and causing that update to hang with Norton:

There’s a misunderstanding: The 24H2 update is already installed. It’s the version I’m running. But Norton blocks any other newer updates since the new version of Norton. And after I removed Norton, all security and other updates have installed correctly.
I tried disabling the Firewall first and that didn’t help. Only removing helped.

@ReaG Before removing the N360 ver 24, were you able to review all of your settings (including program and traffic rules) to see that those weren’t changed from your previous settings when the new version installed? That was a problem for me though not with Windows updates.

Have you tried reinstalling N360 ver 24 since some Norton files could have become corrupted when the new version first installed. If you’re still having problems after a fresh install, reach out to Norton’s tech support. Caveat–I haven’t been successful in reaching them but others have.

While you’re waiting to get this resolved, you might consider installing the previous version of N360 since you mentioned that it was working properly with Windows. Hey, @Puzzler
I did try to review the settings. But I couldn’t manage to fix the blocking of the Windows Update, it seemed all fine - yet, it still didn’t work.
And I haven’t (yet) reinstalled Norton. I might - or I might not - or revert to the earlier version.
It’s really not easy to get hold of their tech support and so I mainly posted here to see if others had a similar problem.
Thank you for the link to the earlier version

Hi @ReaG
You’re most welcome. It’s helpful to read all the messages in that thread. I recall seeing some posts concerning VPN, etc. when reverting to the previous version that may or may not be relevant to you.

As mentioned, I personally haven’t had luck getting hold of Norton’s tech. I tried a couple of times, waiting over an hour once just for an online chat session but I just gave up.

At least we have the option of reverting back if all else fails, which is what I did. It was relatively painless. I did have to re-register one of my computers in my Norton account by first deleting it from the list of devices and adding it back on.

Hopefully Norton will work out all the bugs but in the meantime I’m beginning to look at options other than Norton.

Best of luck. :shamrock:

Also, as a curious note: Since deinstalling Norton, many other things have sped up as well, especially things that need web access. :tada:
