Annoying repeated Norton Security Messages about access to rapportd/sharingd!

Hello All.

I have an Apple MacBook Pro, an iPhone and an iPad, which communicate with each other. I have Norton security installed on my MacBook for many years (updated to latest versions of Norton Security). I have recently started getting " iPhone/iPad is attempting to access rapportd/sharingd; allow/block" messages from Norton Security every time I turn on my MacBook.

Even if I select 'always do this action' (from the drop down options) for access requests from my iPad/iPhone for both rapportd/sharingd and then click allow, Norton Security does not remember these preferences, and the messages pop up again the next time I turn on my MacBook.

A dive into Advanced Settings in Norton security > Firewall > Connection blocking settings reveal that my iPhone and iPad are both allowed to access rapportd and sharingd. However the Norton Security messages still pop up at most inconvenient of times- during meetings and while making presentations.

Any advice on how to stop these annoying messages will be highly appreciated.

Thank you and kind regards.

Still getting the same fail message

Thanks for the update.

8.5.9 still failed for me

Hi,

With the Norton Security for Mac 8.5.9 release, we have whitelisted 'rapport' to reduce firewall notifications. Please let me know if the change works. Thank you.

How do we get this release?  The installer from the download site is still 8.5.8.  Live update does not pick it up either,  We've been living with the rapportd issue for months on end.

Please provide a link to download this update...

Today I emailed the following. I suggest the more of us that do this, maybe the more likely action will happen.

Rapport was not the only popup.

Still receiving several others.  For example: 1_0.jpg

Hello,

I started to have the problem at the same time that I did have the problem with Time Machine reliability: https://community.norton.com/en/forums/norton-security-time-machine-reliability-trick

Maybe it's linked to latest version which broke something ?
Have you tried to disable part of Norton 360 to see if it reproduces or not (I did not yet find a way to disable part of Norton component, excepted using Safe Mode - which of course is useless in our case)

None of the above is a long-term solution; been trying different things I read here and there (cause Norton seems to simply be ignoring this issue -- and by the look of things for a very long time too).

That's it, I'm done with Norton. Turned off renewal and will be moving to a different service.

I'm new to Norton and I want to know why  "computer is attempting to access rapportd on your computer" keep popping up on my MacBook Pro???  I can't get anything done!

Norton error message

Yep, I have an old (6yr) MacBook (Catalina 10.15.6) with a new Norton (1mth) and am experiencing the same popups.

Whilst it doesn’t bother me that much I shall watch for a solution....

A possible (temporary) fix that I have found to work for me is to open the Norton 360 app, manually remove all allowed programs for both Application Blocking and Connection Blocking (do this for Incoming and Outgoing tabs).  Restart the computer, then go back and manually add all the programs that need to be allowed for Application Blocking and Connection Blocking.  At the very bottom, there are drop downs for applications in the dock, and recent applications which had the applications listed so I didn't have to search for them all. This seems to stop all the annoying popups for a while.  I'm not sure what triggers them to start again, but I had a few months with no issues, then they all started up again.  I just updated to macOS 10.15.6 on my iMac after taking the steps above, with no popups when I opened several apps that I have issues with.  I hope Norton gets this fixed soon.

This problem occurs on brand new macs after you install Norton.  So while I am glad a keychain reset helped you, it is not a complete solution.

I used to get that annoying message all the time.

About 6 months ago, I reset my default keychain on my Mac. Since then, the only time I get that annoying message is when I airdrop a picture from my iphone or tablet to my Mac. I must note, that during this 6 months I had several operating system updates too, but still everything works. I suspect Norton must check their code to find out what they do with the keychain.

How do I reset my default keychain on Mac?

To reset your keychain :

  1. Open Keychain Access. ...
  2. From the Keychain drop-down menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Click General, then click Reset My Default Keychain.
  4. Enter with your account login password and then click the OK button.
  5. Quit Keychain Access.
  6. Restart your computer.

Currently I am running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.5.

These problems with rapportd pop-ups and VPN services not working have continued for way to long.  So when my renewal date came up the 1st week of June I uninstalled it and switched to another vendor and I'm much happier.

Update:  As posted recently, I have had a very brief period without pop-ups.  However, as suspected, on updating the iOS version, the pop-ups have started again with the same irritating regularity.

Norton do not appear to have any interest in fixing this issue.

Time to move to another provider people.

Unfortunately, uninstalling has not fixed the issue for me or my clients.

To make certain, I downloaded the Norton removal tool and ran it after I uninstalled Norton using the standard method.

Really unfortunate, I keep hoping that Norton will fix this issue along with a host of others.  However, after reporting these issues for over a year now without a fix I have almost lost all hope.

At the end of this month I will be releasing my client newsletter with recommendations on replacement products.  Clients will no longer wait.

This is what happens when you ignore long time customers.

I was sceptical of doing yet another uninstall/install, as I had already done this twice (the last one was using the 'special' uninstall tool given me by the Norton Helpdesk).

However, as a last ditch attempt, I have recently done another uninstall/install (like bruce-fighting-virus & CMarsh).

The popups appeared again at the first re-boot after re-installing NAV (as expected) and I replied 'allow'/'always take this action' etc.

Since then, the pop-ups have not re-appeared, even after several re-boots.

Might be worth one last try ;)

Not sure if it will revert when I update the MacOS.... we shall see.

Hi, are you still looking into this?

I'm asking because, after having to suffer this incredibly frustrating issue for months now (and like 50 times today only) I am cancelling my Norton subscription, like, today!! It has driven me completely up the wall and its with raportdt as with the initial post, as well as with Dropbox, and it simply doesn't make any difference when I check that it should remember my choice in the future.
