Annoying repeated Norton Security Messages about access to rapportd/sharingd!

Sometimes the "source" is an IPv4 address, sometimes IPv6, and sometimes it's a discreet device name e.g. "iPhone X". I will say, it is clearly related to the apple device ecosystem trying to talk to one another, because it'll pop up with intensity when you're working on your MacBook and you pick up your iPhone and start doing something in parallel. But to the original point, it does it even if you set the Norton Security preferences for "Connection Blocking" to "Always allow" for rapportd and sharingd.

Westwind2020, I think it is likely you are getting this from one of your devices; at the very least I can say what you are receiving is a request from within your local network. The string you are describing is an IP address, but instead of it being an IPv4 address (like 192.168.x.x), it is an IPv6 address. From Wikipedia, you can see that IPv6 addresses are 8 groups of four hexadecimal characters separated by colons. Also, just as 192.168.x.x represents a local IPv4 address, local IPv6 addresses are prefixed by fe80.

I have the same Message, but I don't think it is from my other Apple devices.  The message is The computer "fe80:: then followed by a random string of 19 letters, numbers and colons (:) that change with every pop-up.  I also get message on IP address ie. The computer "192.0.10.3" is attempting to access rapportd on your computer.  I installed Norton LifeLock a couple of months ago, but these notices started showing up this week.  They pop up every 2 - 3 minutes - very annoying.  I always click Block as I don't know who/what is trying to connect to my computer.  What do I do?

I have attached a txt file with the latest message.

Is there any minimum chance Norton decides to make this product usable ? It's been an incredible long time since the first issues were reported (back in version 7, which still works better than 8 by the way), and a lot of us have gone through troubleshooting with Norton personnel. Yet, the only workable solution so far is uninstall Norton altogether or from time to time have a peek upgrading to version 8 and then uninstalling and rolling back to version 7. I'm doing it again right today.

I use  Little Snitch 4 which is a complete firewall for incoming and outgoing connections.

Works all the time and never had any problems.

I am having the same problem. All upgraded, and RapportD and other apps seem to keep triggering the pop-up. I can see they are in the Connection Settings trusted settings for incoming/outgoing.  But even though I select 'always allow' option, the 'block/allow' message still pops up.

I finally uninstalled Norton Security from my Mac.  I got so tired of constantly telling it to "Always Allow connections from rapportd (or 192.142....).  I'm looking for another Security software to replace Norton.

Same issue here, still continuing with version 8.5.4.

Whenever MacBook is shut down, at reboot NAV ignores all previous saved changes to firewall settings and asks again for rapportd, http-alt, print sharing etc connection settings.

This issue has been going on for years now and does not appear to have been suitably addressed by Norton.

Any advice to avoid this annoying issue would be appreciated.

I only get it, when from my ipad I initiate an airdrop.

I have the same issue & am using version 8.5.3 so upgrading to this latest version is not a solution. I have called Norton Technical Support & their advice never works - the problem persists. The only way to stop the annoying pop up is to turn off Connection Blocking. This apparently puts my computer at risk (I now get constant messages from Norton that my computer is at risk) but they don't come as often or at inconvenient times.

Shame on you, Norton, for not fixing this annoying problem!

Hi azdude,

Thank you for your reply. I have done what you have said- selected the 'always allow' option from the dropdown list. However, as I have written in my first post, Norton Security does not remember this preference, and inspite of selecting 'always allow' option, the 'block/allow' message still pops up!

I do have the latest version (8.5.3) of Norton Security.

I had the same issue.  Version 8.53 of Norton Security fixes the issue.  However, when the pop up appears you need to select always allow for:

avconferenced

CommCenter

rapportd

sharingd!
