Thanks Phil. Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. It's a little busy around her.
My Security Centeer is disabled. As to the latest version, my versions are somewhat different because I am using the Rogers version as they supply it as an addon to their High speed Service.
I have tried to update to see if I could get a later update but Norton tells me my system is up to date.
My version is: 15.0.0.60 for Rogers Yahoo! High Speed Internet.
Yes, you are using an older version. I checked out the Rogers High Speed Internet site and it appears that your Norton product is built into the Rogers Yahoo Online Protection Suite. If that is your case, then you may not be able to upgrade to 15.5.0.23.
I also noticed that Rogers Yahoo Online Protection Suite takes over control of other aspects such as your internet security and privacy settings.
Am I correct that you are using the Rogers Online Suite?
Yes Phil, you are correct, I am using the Rogers Online Suite. However it doesn't completely take over control. It can be customized. for example I do not have the Parental controls nor the Self help Software installed. Also it links directly to the Norton program so the firewall and antivrus is completely configurable just as in the Norton regular program.
If you have followed all of the instructions in this post including confirming that your Windows Security Center is disabled, then I would probe around in the Rogers Online Protection Suite to see if there are any options for “notifications” there that may be causing a conflict.
hi pete - i went back through this thread and noticed that there was some confusion somewhere over the last two pages or so. so with apologies to everyone, i'd just like to confirm the problem you are experiencing:
everytime you start your computer, something is telling you your antivirus/antithreat protection is off or missing. my question is whether this is Windows telling you this or Norton.
if it is Windows Security Center, i drifted across these instructions for rebuilding the repository or this MS article for more details instructions.
if it is Norton, what is the exact message it is giving you.
i apologize again for asking, but i saw Matt go sideways on page 9 or so i'm worried there is confusion about the actual issue.
It is definitely a Norton window that pops up as it has the Norton colors and days "Norton" in the top left corner of the popup window. The window itself appears in the lower right of the screen. 95% of the time all it says is: "you have turned of your antivrus and firewall".
the other 5% it says the same thing but adds "your system might be at risk" .
I have been trying to capture the popup but it doesn't seem to want to be captured.
Mel, I still wasn't able to capture a screen shot of the messages so I decided to try it with my camera. The quality isn't great but at least you can see that it is definitely a Norton message and luckily I was able to capture the 2 different messages I am getting. As I said 95% of the time I get the first (shortest) one.
I hope this helps. I'd really like to get this thing figured out.
Have you tried exploring in the Rogers Online Protection Suite to see if there are any references to notifications?
Hi Phil, Yes I have looked throught the Protection Suite and there isn't really much to it. It's really not much more than a menu that points directly to the Norton components.
I don't know if this will work because of the Rogers Packaging, but open your main Norton Protection Center Window.
Click on "Help and Support" in the upper right corner. When that window opens, hopefully after a few seconds of loading, you will see an "Auto Fix" window. Click on "Start Support Session".
That is an online tool that checks and repairs your Norton product.
Because you have a "bundled" Norton product, it may not work and there is an outside chance that it could mess up the Rogers Online Protection suite. If things do go haywire, hopefully you can reinstall the Rogers package.
I have actually already tried that. Strangely, it found one problem and fixed it but didn't give any message or indication of what it found or fixed but nevertheless it made no difference.
Another thing that baffles me is that when I look at the Norton logs, there is nothing there to indicate that at anytime did Antivirus or the Firewall get turned off, only that "Intrusion Prevention has been enabled". There zero entries in the Error Log section and zero entries in the Security Risk section.
-My Norton is not part of a bundle...it is the full stand-alone Internet Securuty downloaded from the Norton site
-All of my Windows security features are turned off
-I tried the Norton auto-fix and all it stated no problems could be found
-PROBLEM - As posted several posts above, when the computer is booted up, there are three warning messages from Norton (not from windows) that state'you have turned off your AV', etc... Norton still works, but you get those messages when the product starts up
Start>Run>Type services.msc in the run dialogue box and then click OK.This will open up the services window.Find Symantec Core LC under the services aand change its status to Started and Automatic(It will be Started and Manual).
Then open the Norton product>Click on Norton Internet Security tab>Under settings ,click on Norton Internet Security options>In the Norton Internet Security options window, click on Autoprotect on the left pane>Check the box Load Autoprotect on Startup.
Now reboot your computer and check whether you are still receiving this message.
SP1 not installed on my system (don’t plan to at this time). I installed NIS2008 after a reformat, reload OS, all MS updates, then NIS2008. Before my reformat, I had NIS2007 which worked so nicely. I am not planning on doing another reformat-reload process at this time. To me, it should be a software update that Symantec supplies to the NIS2008 build. For now I can deal with those pop-ups since I know NIS is still working in the background. But I do hope they send out a fix for this eventually. I’ll try to bump this thread periodically…as everyone else should too until we have a solution.
