Auto update to version 24.9.9452.995 problems

Sunday morning Norton auto updated to 24.9.9452.995. Not a good experience. First a pop-up from Norton, I think, saying it was updating, then Norton tray icon red cross, then a large blank box middle of screen which disappeared shortly after. Installation then finished – done a couple of manual LUD’s & restarts – red cross still in tray Icon. Hovering over icon ‘You are not protected’, opened Norton, ‘You.are still protected’. Windows Security said there was an issue. Everything else seemed to be working OK but evidently, an issue somewhere.

Turned computer off for an hour, then Edge would NOT load, it was before, just sat there ‘loading’, red X still in tray icon still. At that time, in Trouble Shooting, two options, one of which was REMOVE. Clicked, that started Norton NRnR which then came up with an error. Tried stand-alone NRnR that came up with error.

Removed through Windows Uninstaller, rebooted – Edge working OK immediately. From Norton Account, ‘Install on new computer’ downloaded a set-up file, ran & 234.9.9452.995 installed, Norton tray icon no red cross now, main Norton window now ‘You are protected’ as opposed to ‘You.are still protected’ – Edge working OK. Trouble shooting now shows ‘Repair’ option instead of ‘Remove’ and a second option, which I forget what that was.

Now, this morning, Software Updater notification 3 items need updating, 2 of which are MS OS items,. The other is Firefox which I know about & awaiting the final clean release. I have SW auto updater turned off, before SW updater could be turned off completely., I do not want Norton interfering with my OS or Apps. Now if I require to remove or remove & reinstall, how is this done now as NRnR does not work. Norton, please give users the option to revert back to the old version of Norton 360 – that worked OK. Afraid of what will happen on next update, will that work properly?

Various comments on forum that this update has BUGS, certainly it has – not impressed at all, useful features & info that were there before have been removed.

Update: Norton Software Updater - found xtra info on this - according to Norton these are ‘CRITICAL’ - NO they are NOT- I want to continue to be able to USE my computer. Do other apps INTERFERE with Norton - NO they don’t - so Norton STOP suggesting your interference with other apps. BEWARE all users

Latest Norton 360 version forces backup to Cloud, with gratuitous self-serving statement about alleged unreliability of local removeable storage, to trick userz into having their then Cloud backup surveilled for Faecebook type sneaky advertising purposes. Shame en you Norton! Please be honest/transparent.

After much time wasted while no backup being run, seemed solution would be to uninstall latest version then reinstall previous, from…cspn360…which wastes quite a lot more time to run thru to completion, with no protection in place during this unnecessary escapade. However, even after this lengthy process, including looong presumably related delay en restarting computer, recv’d cheery msg from Norton that all this was to no avail as Norton abt to reinstall latest version.

Contacted Norton’z Support Centre In/dia, spoke to Supervisor to 1) Complain abt this devious tactic/waste of time 2) Request reinstatement of option to backup to local removeable drivez 3) In alternative, cancel looong term subscription.

Have alwayz advised our 2,000 or so practice clientz to install Norton, even quite recently…no more, due to Norton’z self-destructive ‘own goal’.

If Cloud storage limit exceeded, option to backup to external removeable drive is apparently/mysteriously presented. Workaround: flood Cloud storage with ‘garbage’…what a waste of time!
